The heavy snows come in the winter moons,
(Ai-oo, brother, hear me howl)

The wolf pack sings a lonesome tune
(Ki-yi, the pack is on the prowl)

The prey is thin, the food is scarce
(Hunger, hunger, drives us far)

The starving wolf is thrice as fierce
(Hunting beneath the hostile stars)

The tracks of the quarry in the snow are clear
(Follow, brother, the path is marked)

From his trail we shall not veer
(Onward, now, through the cold and dark)

Make haste! make haste, or go without
(Hurry, brother, while the hunting’s good)

Follow the cry of the hunting scout
(His call rings out in the lonely wood)

Now run, now run! Take heed, be swift
(Ai-ai-ai, the quarry’s near)

Silent paws over snowy drifts
(See him, brother, smell his fear)

Now the cry of the pack rings out at once
(Closer, brother, all together)

The chase is on! Here goes the hunt!
(Teeth of steel, pads of leather)

Spring at him, brother, take him down!
(All else, the blood lust overtakes)

Now jump, now jump! With a powerful bound
(Something deep inside awakes)

Ayi! Now at him, at his throat!
(The quarry’s fallen, now to bite)

Blood stains red his tawny coat
(This one does not live through the night)

The hunt is ended, now begins the feast
(The eyes are empty, the legs are still)

Eat now, brother, of the hunted beast
(Thus is the wolf-song of the winter kill)
