In the middle of a dirty lake, I’m told

If deep enough you go,

You’ll find a piece of blemished gold,

Priceless even so.

Why would one toss out this treasure

Into such a poisoned lake?

How could this, worth beyond all measure,

Be mistaken for a mistake?

Because they thought it was not real gold?

Because they had no time?

Is that why this horrid sin, I’m told,

Is not considered a crime?

You say, “It’s my choice,” but still I say,

Did the gold have a choice when you threw it away?

The author's comments:

Abortion is a topic that I feel very strongly about. I wanted to write a compelling poem about it, so I chose the analogy of a piece of gold thrown into the middle of a lake, a treasure mistaken for a mistake.
