With updated graphical and processor options, Asus pushes the boundaries for sub-15-inch, compact, all-purpose laptop performance at a reasonable price with its 4th-generation Zephyrus G14.

Overall, the build quality feels phenomenal. An all-metal chassis paired with a solid hinge and screen design makes for a premium and durable product. The chassis is made of a metal alloy, while the perforated aluminum panel reinforces the display. Asus chose to use an Aluminum-Magnesium alloy for the chassis, providing the durability and weight reduction expected for a product at this price point. While the chassis material is standard, something unique Asus brings is the perforated lid. The lid is inlaid with a holographic material reflecting a burnt titanium coloration, bringing a unique stylistic element to the drab laptop world. 

Asus outdid itself by upgrading the display used on the 2023 G14 to a more premium offering from AU Optronics. Equipped is a bright, color-accurate, fast responding (10ms), QHD+ 16:10 165htz display, which can reach 500 nits of brightness and has a Pantone-validated 100% DCI-P3 color accuracy. Compared to prior generations, such as the 2020 G14, this is a significant upgrade for consumers, providing more vertical screen space, a resolution upgrade, response speed, brightness, and color accuracy. 

Regarding laptop keyboards, Asus has provided the G14 with a phenomenal offering. With deep key travel and a responsive spring, the keyboard is much preferable for typing compared to options from other manufacturers, such as Apple’s shallow butterfly switches. While not the best on the market, the trackpad is industry standard for 14-inch laptops, coming in at 6 inches diagonally with a smooth glass surface comparable to Apple’s MacBook Pro 14. 

While computing performance in the laptop industry moves slowly compared to their desktop counterparts for consumers looking to upgrade from their older first-generation G14s, those generational improvements do add up. As reviewed, the 2023 Asus G14 has a top-of-the-line Ryzen 7940HS and a mid-range RTX 4060 graphics card. This level of performance will offer a great AAA gaming experience while also being powerful enough for professional programs such as Adobe or Autodesk products.

The battery is nothing short of amazing for a small laptop this powerful. While browsing the web, typing documents, or watching videos, you should expect at least 7 hours from the G14 on a full charge. If you engage in more demanding tasks such as gaming or using productivity applications, this estimate will dip majorly, and you should expect >3 hours of battery life. 

I recommend the G14 for someone who needs a portable and long-lasting laptop with the capability to run professional applications or games when desired. The G14 also has the benefits of being reasonably priced for its performance and is a well-rounded package with a great display, build quality, and inputs.
