Set in 19th century England, the story opens with10-year-old Jane Eyre orphaned and living with her cruel aunt and wicked cousins.Jane's father is presumed dead in the West Indies; her mother died shortly afterJane's birth. Her aunt treats Jane little better than a slave and sends her to aboarding school for poor girls, where Jane spends the next 10 years, eventuallybecoming a teacher there.
Jane sends out inquiries looking for a positionas a governess, and receives a reply from Thornfield Hall. She arrives there tofind the master of the house, Edward Rochester, rarely home.
As the storyunravels the heroine finds herself in situations she never could have imagined.Homeless and penniless, Jane proves that a woman can find herself and be someonein a world dominated by men. Bronte's Jane Eyre is a story of tragedy, love anddeception.
