Hobbs and Shaw
Hobbs and Shaw proves to be an epic roller coaster ride that not only highlights the relationship between two of the Fast and Furious franchise's most iconic characters in Luke Hobbs and Deckard Shaw, but it also showcases the importance of family as well as the action-packed adventure that viewers have come to expect. As the name suggests, the movie revolves around Luke Hobbs and Deckard Shaw, who despite their glaringly similar personalities, don't get along with one another, mostly due to a conflict between both of them wishing to be the alpha male. While Luke Hobbs is a government agent that believes in stopping criminals and protecting both his country and the world, Deckard Shaw is an ex-British military operative that is now an outcast and former criminal with no boundaries in achieving his own personal goals. Luke Hobbs and Deckard Shaw have an intriguing relationship with one another, mostly because they have fought alongside the same side as one another and have also shared blows with one another. Either way, they both talk smack and have a rivalry of sorts to try to prove who is superior between them, which includes them trading physical blows with one another, and it is apparent that they don't typically enjoy working with one another. However, Hobbs and Shaw must shove aside their differences when they face a criminal in anarchist Brixton, who has now transformed into a cyber-genetically enhanced being that is stronger, faster and smarter than regular humans. Brixton believes in making more people like him, seeing himself as the next step of evolution for humanity, and this causes Brixton to seek out a biological threat that acts as a virus and has the ability to essentially cause organs to melt. Upon grabbing the virus, Brixton finally has the power to shape the world in his vision, but in the process, he ends up besting a rogue British agent and forcing her to act as an outcast after framing her. However, this British agent turns out to be Shaw's sister, meaning Deckard Shaw has plenty of incentive in stopping Brixton. Now forced to work together, Shaw and Hobbs must work together as a functional team if they want to have any chance of saving the world from Brixton's brutal plans.
Hobbs and Shaw is a relentlessly entertaining roller coaster that will be sure to please with its surprisingly charismatic characters and compelling story that brings out the best qualities in the concepts that have fueled the Fast and Furious franchise thus far. While the movie continues the whopping and occasionally overwhelming dollops of the meaning and importance of family that have become a staple in the series, it does so in a manner that showcases said message without being glaringly obvious or a nuisance.
Instead, the theme of the movie is elucidated with relative easy, and thanks to the natural charm of Luke Hobbs and Deckard Shaw, as well as their actors, the extent of family is highlighted through an entertaining adventure that is bold, daring and has enough action to captivate just about everyone's attention.
Hobbs and Shaw is, as the name suggests, a continuation of the roller coaster ride that is the relationship between Luke Hobbs and Deckard Shaw. As two of the most likable and strongest characters in the Fast and Furious franchise, it shouldn't be a surprise that plenty of fans eagerly anticipated seeing what it would be like if they had a solo venture. Their personalities are brought to the spotlight and so are their striking similarities that make them two halves of the same coin. Due to the grand amount of character development packed into both characters' story arcs, Hobbs and Shaw are able to be shaped for the better, and viewers come away with a better understanding of who they are as people. Furthermore, this also aids the franchise in complicating their history with one another, because Shaw has gone from being one of the most notable villains in the franchise to being someone that can aid Hobbs, who has one of the clearest mentalities when it comes to doing the right thing. With Hobbs and Shaw now fighting each other as much as working together, the buddy relationship between them has been fleshed out, but at the same time, watchers can only wonder how long this might last.
Hobbs and Shaw greatly benefits from the stark contrasts between the two main characters. While Hobbs is a hulking beast that can physically take down just about anyone with his raw strength, Shaw relies on his agility and quickness to outmaneuver his opponents. While physically opposites, their personalities are actually more alike than not, and their interactions with one another become a shining portion of the movie, mostly due to a talented cast. Dwayne Johnson is terrific as Luke Hobbs, and not only is he great for the role physically, but he also manages to bring emotion and passion to the role, as well as an incredible amount of intensity, to ensure that the character is notable and memorable. Jason Statham's portrayal of Deckard Shaw is nothing short of superb, and he brings out the raw ferocity of his character. While there are plenty of other notable roles, such as Idris Elba's Brixton Lore, who plays a meaningful and convincing villain that poses as a true threat, and Vanessa Kirby's Hattie Shaw, who plays a surprisingly crucial role as Deckard's sister, the true heart and soul of the movie is the on-screen chemistry between Johnson's Hobbs and Statham's Shaw.
Hobbs and Shaw has action galore, a star-studded cast and more of the formula that has made the Fast and Furious franchise so popular. While the movie has plenty of incredible scenes that are just a wonder to behold, like Hobbs practically carrying a helicopter singlehandedly, at the center of the movie is the true meaning of family, which aids giving the movie some purpose aside from raw entertainment. Aided by plenty of special cameos that will be sure to be pleasant surprises, this movie has just about it all in the realm of making watchers feel satisfied, and for that, the movie instantly becomes an absolute must-see.
