Zombieland
Zombieland proves to be a surprisingly charming adventure that will please audiences with its mixture of humor, violence, and zombies. In a world where there are more zombies than humans, it seems like all of the remaining humans must struggle to survive by themselves, trusting no one and doing whatever it takes to not become a zombie. One of the last humans, Columbus, was a nerdy college kid that now has no option but to join the war against the undead. He lives by a set of strict rules that he claims are the reason why he has lasted so long, and these include doing cardio, wearing seat belts and so much more as he attempts to figure out the ins and outs of living in a world run by the dead. Columbus' plan is to eventually go from Texas to Columbus, Ohio, where he believes his parents are. Columbus thinks he may finally find a way to get there when he meets another one of the last remaining humans alive in Tallahassee. Tallahassee is trying to get to Tallahassee, Florida, but Columbus and Tallahassee agree that they might be able to aid each other in their quest to live long enough to get to their respective locations. While Columbus tends to be afraid of many things, known for his strange array of phobias, Tallahassee is practically the complete opposite. He's strong, has a weird sense of humor when it comes to zombies, and takes the time to destroy everything in his path whenever possible. All he wants is to get his hands on a Twinkie, which often puts Columbus and Tallahassee in bad situations that would otherwise not be needed. In fact, it is during one of these attempts to gain the delicious treat where they run into Wichita and Little Rock, two sisters that are also just trying to survive. Their plan is to make it to a safe heaven in Los Angeles, which has been rumored to be one of the last safe places on the planet. Discovering the more the merrier, or at least thinking such, the four of them decide that they might as well join together in the fight against zombies, until Wichita and Little Rock at least make it to Los Angeles. As the team abides to Columbus' wacky rules and Tallahassee's ability to kill zombies like no one else, they finally begin to have fun for one of the very first times in Zombieland.
Zombieland manages to transform into an epic and exhilarating roller coaster ride that will capture the audience's attention and entertain them with ease. While the movie may appear to just be another dumb, zombie comedy, this film is so much more. The movie combines together plenty of talented actors and eccentric concepts to create an action-packed adventure that has something for everybody. The light tone of the movie allows there to be an array of sophisticated jokes and even simpler comedy, like simply hitting a zombie with a car door, and it's this treatment of the otherwise dark ideas in the movie that makes things so entertaining. The characters know how ridiculous their situation is, especially considering that the country is practically run by zombies, and this makes things immensely more substantial for viewers.
Zombieland may have zombies, just like so many other movies, but its the utilization of the undead that makes this movie stand out. Zombies are in the movie, and although they are a device to highlight certain ideas, they aren't actually the core of the movie. The true heart and soul is made up of the lovable and likable characters that star. Their diverse personalities and ability to contrast with one another creates an odd family that is easy to root for and surprisingly enjoyable to watch battle zombies. As much as the zombies add to the spirit of the movie, they pale in comparison to the incredible amount of character development that brings all of the main characters to life.
Zombieland greatly benefits from a star-studded cast that make the movie both memorable and realistic. Jesse Eisenberg is excellent as Columbus, and as the lead character, he brings emotion, comedy and passion to the role. Woody Harrelson is spectacular as Tallahassee, and not only does his character have some of the greatest lines in the whole movie, including some pretty witty one-liners, but his character is layered and just has so much depth. Emma Stone's Wichita is another worthy addition to the adventure, and her character has plenty of spunk and personality that greatly contrasts with Eisenberg's Columbus. There's also an awesome cameo appearance from Bill Murray as himself, which proves to be quite noteworthy.
Zombieland is a thoroughly superb adventure that will blow audiences' minds. The mixture of humor with violent action works wonders for the film, and it ensures that watchers will have no idea what comes next. Rotten Tomatoes gave the movie an impressive 90%, and an outstanding 95% of Google users liked the movie, solidifying the concept that the movie is a great fit for just about everyone. Without a doubt, this is an absolute must-see.
