“Avengers: Age of Ultron” tells the sequel of the Marvel Avengers battle against the computer villain, Ultron. When Tony Stark jumpstarts a dormant program, a tragic mistake, the reunited Avengers set out to put a stop to Ultron before he can wipe out the planet. While on their quest, each team member of the infamous Avenger gang, Captain America (Chris Evans), Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.), Hulk/Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo), Thor (Chris Hemsworth), Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson), and Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner), must face their worst haunting fear. Directed and written by Joss Whedon, this box office hit took in $456 million and was #2 in sales opening weekend only to its predecessor “Avengers.”

The movie is set in the Eastern European country of Sokovia and in New York City. When the movie opens, the Avengers go to a secret Hydra base in Italy to retrieve Loki’s missing scepter. During their mission, we are introduced to the Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen) and Quicksilver (Aaron Taylor-Johnson) two future team members. Once the mission is complete and the Avengers return to their Tower, Tony discovers artificial intelligence in a computer drive. He and Bruce Banner attempt to create protectors of humanity. But it all goes wrong... instead they create an evil artificial intelligence robot that will wipe out all of humanity. Once Ultron (James Spader) escapes, Cap blames Tony for the failure. The Avengers agree they have to track him down and destroy him. In the meantime, Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver join sides with Ultron against Stark.

The Avengers set out to find Ultron.  They are tipped off that Ultron is going to obtain vibranium, the rarest metal on earth, the same kind of metal which Cap's shield is made of. They intersect the location of the seller to stop Ultron before he obtains it. Initially they are unsuccessful since the twins, Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver, protect Ultron. What makes matters worse is that Scarlet Witch uses her powers to tap into the Avenger's minds to make them see their darkest fears. Iron Man’s fear is the death of his entire team. Thor’s darkest fear is that he will not be able to rule Asgard. Steve’s greatest fear is finding his ‘home’ which would not be a battlefield. Black Widow’s fear is her past memories of training to be an assassin. Bruce Banner’s greatest fear is the out of control anger of Hulk. Hawkeye remained unaffected.  But, not so with Hulk. Her hex amassed an uncontrollable rage on Bruce and he lashed a rampage outside the lair of Claw. Only Iron Man could stop him.

Once Ultron escapes with the vibranium, the team retreats. Meanwhile both Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver discover Ultron’s true plans. They decide to join the Avengers in helping to terminate Ultron. In Marvel fashion, we find action scene upon action. The Avengers learn that Ultron is creating Vision. Ultron places the infinity stone from Loki’s sceptre in Vision’s forehead. The Avengers intercept Ultron from stealing a tissue making device from the laboratory of their friend Dr. Helen Cho(Claudia Chim). Ultron knocks them unconscious and he escapes. The Avengers catch up to him, Captain America boards the truck and distracts Ultron while Hawkeye and Black Widow retrieve the device. Amidst the commotion, the twins take a stand alongside the Avengers to face off with Ultron. They capture the device, which to their surprise has an artificial body in it, and haul it back to the Avengers tower. While Cap and Iron Man argue what to do with it, Thor storms in and uses his hammer to revive the body. Upon doing this, Vision (Paul Bettany) is born.

Vision, who surprisingly sides with the Avengers, reveals that Ultron’s plan is to use the entire city of Sokovia as a giant Earth killing meteorite to annihilate mankind. Cap takes command in their revised plan to stop Ultron and save the citizens of Sokovia. The Avengers evacuate the citizens while Iron Man searches for Ultron and the meteor creating machine. Iron Man locates him but is too late. When he arrives the machine is activated. The entire city begins to lift up from the ground. The old Shield helicarrier, Nick Fury and a few remaining shield agents, come to the rescue and assist with evacuating the remaining citizens. While Shield handles the evacuation, the Avengers battle Ultron and his minion copies. As they near victory tragedy strikes. While saving Hawkeye and a boy, QuickSilver is shot and killed. Enraged and devastated by the loss of her brother, Scarlet Witch destroys Ultron. But she is too late. Moments after Ultron is gone, the last remaining minion pushes the lever and Sokovia begins to plunge toward Earth. In the final moment, Captain America and the Avengers make it to safety. Iron Man destroys the meteor and saves all of mankind. Iron Man redeems himself.

The ending packs a surprise punch as it appears our former super heroes are on their way out to make way for new actors. Hulk disappears and goes into hiding. Thor and Iron Man amicably part ways with the Avengers. Captain America finds his home. He will lead the new Avenger team into the world:  Black Widow, Scarlet Witch, Vision, Falcon (Anthony Mackie), and War Machine (Don Cheadle). So it appears that Joss Whedon will continue his Avenger series with a new cast of characters. May 2016, “Captain America: Civil War” includes this new cast.

This adventure packed, high thrill, sci-fi fantasy is one of the top movies of 2015 and of all time. In my opinion, it is an extraordinary film filled with action packed scenes that keep you on the edge of your seat. The movie was well directed and the actors played their roles brilliantly, apart from the fact that Joss Whedon scripted too many characters into this movie. Too many side stories detract from the main plot like Thor’s vision of Thanos using the infinity stones to take over the universe. I was disappointed with the way Ultron was portrayed which was completely different from previous Marvel villains. When I saw the trailer, I thought that Ultron would be a traditional, kick-ass bad guy, but when I saw the film, he was more of an insane protagonist who thinks his system of peace would really make the world a better place. James Spader, a perfect villain on ‘The Blacklist,’ seems a strange fit for an oversized metal robot. There were many conversational philosophical scenes where he expresses his views. But, it does add to the comedy of the movie. I enjoy Whedon’s comedic breaks throughout. I appreciate how far Whedon went to show the audience what each member of the Avengers feared the most. He gave greater depth to each character and stirred our interest in them. The message he depicted is: you can’t be a true hero without facing your greatest fear. When each Avenger faced their greatest fear, they became even greater heroes than they were before. The most outstanding role I would say should go to Chris Evans. He depicts the true nature of Captain America and the spirit of America: loyal leadership and not giving up without a fight. “Avengers: Age of Ultron” was one of the greatest movies I have seen so far this year. If you are looking to watch a movie that will thoroughly entertain you and keep you on the edge of your seat bursting with excitement, this is the Marvel epic for you.
