An original song titled "Penny and a Rake" by Cody Barnes

Lyrics
What do we all want to say?
Nothing better to do
We're pushing everyone away
For a better world we do

For a penny and a rake
What's the price we'll pay?
For a penny and a rake
Will be the end of day

Mold me into something that I can break
Holding onto nothing so I can take

To do anything at all
Nothing better to do
My mind's my greatest flaw
So I don't think I do

I hold onto what I got
Cause no one dares to take
The image in my brain has stopped
When I open up and wake

See the world go round
A penny and a rake
If nothing's what you got
Nothing's what you take

The world is made from nothing so I create
All this into something that I can hate

To do anything at all
Nothing better to do
My mind's my greatest flaw
So I don't think I do

Time's the idea in our heads
That's helping us sleep sound
Order's only money spent
That makes the world go round

What do we all want to say?
Nothing better to do
We're pushing everyone away
For a better world we do

For a penny and a rake
What's the price we'll pay?
For a penny and a rake
Will be the end of day

A penny and a rake (4X)

Hey there xpurplemacaronix sorry It has taken me so long to reply back. I just recently started using my Teen Ink account again. A penny and a rake doesn't really symbolize anything besides minimum wage and physical labor. I was basically writing about how work consumes alot of people and my frustration for those who want to be doctors or lawyers or coal miners just because it earns them cash. I just think people who only care about monetary value going in to anything are basically setting themselves up for failure and long term regret. So a person would not rake lawns for a penny, but they would for 40,000 dollars, but raking lawns is very unexciting and unfulfilling job. I'm sure everyone would eventually get tired of this at some point and would probably constantly complain to themselves and others about how much they hate their job. In my opinion success is more the the money we earn. If we are not content about the work we do, then we probably do not feel very successful. So it's more of a cautionary song than anything. There are also some other meanings in there, but that was basically what was running through my mind when I wrote it. It probably doesn't make much sense to you because it has alot of sarcasm in it, just like my other songs do. Anyways, sorry about any frustration this may have given you.

Right, so this me being a total creeper, commenting on two of your pieces and being the only one for each. But dude, WHY do you keep writing things I don't understand?? I got the other song, and bits and pieces of this one I get, but i completely don't get what the penny and the rake symbolize. Maybe I'm thinking too deeply into this....meh, whatever, but it would be totaly cool if you replied back and explained this song to me. (By the way, I'm totaly jealous of your song writing skills. I've tried writing peices of my own, but they just never seem to flow right. Anyway, just throwin that out there.)
