The tryout
December 14, 2020
I can’t believe this is happening I through my clothes on and hoped in my car and drove to the campus. This may be the most nervous I have been in a while. I swerved into a parking lot and went to the door with all the other guys. They were all hunched over groaning and rolling their eyes, some even left. I got to the front and could not believe my eyes.
“Hey Eli, are excited for are showcase tomorrow?” said Charlie.
“Yeah, I guess but I’m so nervous,” replied Eli.
When I was walking home from the park to get my last shots up for my showcase tomorrow, I realized how hard I worked for this and Charlie is just good he doesn’t even have to practice. I mean we are best friends, but it is just a little annoying sometimes. I get home set my annoying alarm for five a.m. and go to sleep. I wake up and everything is so blurry I hear my dad pounding on the wall to say I must go. I get dressed and grab water then I’m out. I look at the time it says 5:15 I must be there at 5:45 so I think I’m good on timing. I pull up to UNC and see all the guys around the door I panicked. I hop out and Charlie comes running.
He said, “look at the door.”
It says only one spot in all caps. That does not make any sense since they invited all of us here.
“I can’t believe they only have one scholarship to give” said Eli.
“I know right that means we are going against each other” said Charlie.
“Doesn’t this bring back memories when we were in 6th grade and I got the last spot on the team,” said Charlie
Eli said, “oh yeah great memories.”
“Watch it happen again for the last time” said Charlie.
“Mhm I don’t know man” Said Eli.
I stepped foot in the gym, and it felt like a dream all I heard were coaches yelling and balls bouncing.
The coach screamed “Get on the line.”
Coach shouted, “Now boys there is only one spot, so you have to show us something special you hear me.”
“Yes sir,” we said.
I was tired he was just making us run, I could not wait to show them what I got when we played 5v5. The only problem is I will have to guard Charlie because he is on the opposite team and my height. Which I don’t want to go up against my best friend. We finally got to play I was doing pretty good. I was probably top five, but I mean there were only 10 people there. I hit a few threes and I was completely locking up Charlie. He hasn’t scored yet. But there was a lot I mean a lot of trash talking especially between Charlie and me.
“Is that all you got,” Charlie replied.
“Come on man,” I said.
The coach said, “Alright that is it I will send out who is getting a full scholarship to UNC later tonight.”
I was walking out, and Charlie said “You wanna grab breakfast?”
“Yeah, for sure,” I said.
Later that night I got an email from UNC and I opened it said, “CONGRATS you got the scholarship.”
I was so excited, but I went to Charlie’s house to make sure he is good.
He said, “I’m all good but congrats you deserved it.”
