August 2022 Fiction Contest: The Treasure Chest
Seventy-three worms, I count. I scoop up the pink string of flesh and throw it over my shoulder.
“Grandpa’s mind decayed a long time ago. Stop digging.”

“No.”
My shovel hits something hard. Please, not another rock. I lean closer. The shine of lacquered mahogany grabs my eye. “It’s there!” My shaking hands lift the chest.
Dad opens the chest. He stares.
“What?” I walk towards him, but everything spins. A ball of mud writhing with worms rolls inside of the chest. My knees buckle. Gold flashes in the corner of my eye before everything turns black.
