Not Just Equals, but Friends
A little white child crosses the street
and walks to the corner.
A blind black man stumbles up
cane quivering back and forth.
The white child looked up awestruck
and stopped to ponder.
He had always been taught
to stay away from strangers.
Especially strangers
of the black kind…
He looked across the street
and waited for the light to change.
As the light changed hues the child reached up
and took the black man’s hand in his own.
Together they walked across the street
not just as equals but as friends.
