The Distance
In the Big City it was the time of rain. The rain would come around every few weeks or so. The rain wasn't as common this time of year since it was almost summer. It was the beginning of May, and school had just finished. This was the day that the Dukes were leaving town for the countryside. Emily who was only 15 at the time was up in her room packing. She only had three days to pack until they moved out. Her friends came to visit her before she left. Holding back tears Emily sat there and said goodbye to her friends. The time had come that they had to leave, Emily her Mom Jane, Dad Mike, and Brother Henry.
The drive only took about two hours till they got there. They had finally gotten to the house. There wasn't much around it was a small town if you could even call it that. When they got to their house they were greeted by a boy and his dad. They were their neighbors who lived across the street. The Stevens Mark the dad and Charlie the boy. Mike got out of the car and shook Mark's hand. Emily got out of the car and saw Charlie standing there he wasn't much of a talker so she went up to him. Everyone talked for a while. Eventually they found themselves at the Stevens house for diner. It was i nice night, Emily thought she would do fine out here in the countryside. After dinner they all went straight to bed since they were all tired from moving.
The next few weeks were rough trying to adapt and get all set down. Emily woke up early in the morning, so early the sun was still down. She was not used to being awake before the sun was up, but she moved on. Today her friends were coming out to see them. It had been a while since Emily had seen her friends. When she looked outside their bus had just got into the station. Filled with excitement she quickly got dressed and ran down to the station.
When she got there she saw all of her friends there. She was so happy to see all of them, she was especially happy to see Gabe. See Emily has a crush on Gabe, but she was always too afraid to tell him. They all spend the day in their backyard around the big tree. It was a fun day but school was about to start soon so they wouldn't be able to see each other a lot since it's a far drive. So for some this was a final goodbye for now.
Later that night Emily was sitting in her room. She was up in the window sill looking out into the land. She started to cry realizing that she was all alone out there. None of her friends were there, she didn't know anyone, she really was alone. Sure she could talk with Charlie but he didn't seem like someone that she would be in common with. At this time she had her first realization that she was not going to like it out here.
A few days have gone by and still Emily has yet to leave her room. Her mom went upstairs to talk with her. She knocked on the door and said “Emily can we talk?”
“NO”
“Emily please I understand that this change isn't ideal, but we can work through this.”
“No I want to go back to the city!”
“I know but if you want to talk about this a little bit more i'll be downstairs.”
It was night now, the light in the street glows dimmer and dimmer. Emily is still just looking out her window. She looked at the house across the way and saw Charlie up in his room looking out at the land as well. They make eye contact and waves to her and she waves back. He signals her to come outside, so for the first time in days she went outside.
They met underneath the light in the street. Charlie wanted to know why he hasn’t seen her in a long time. So he asked. She replied with the same statement he himself made when they first moved out there.
“I don’t like it out here it’s different and I’m not sure if i will like it.”
“It's ok i said the same thing when i first got here, i wasn't sure about all of this change and what not but i moved on and realized that everything will be ok.”
“Really I thought that I was the only one who thought that out here. I thought that you lived out here for all of your life.”
“No i moved out here a couple of years ago. There used to be another girl that lived in the same house as you. When i started to trap myself in my room she came over and helped me with the change and getting used to the countryside not the big city. So i know what it's like to have to go through this change like you do.”
“Really I bet with her help you go through the change pretty quickly.”
“ Yeah she definitely helped with the change but it was always hard for me to get used to the change, but trust me the change is necessary and also its ok to have change in your life.”
“ If you say so, but i'm still not sure that i will like it out here.”
“Trust me you will it's not that bad out here i'll show you around and if you need anything you can always just ask me i live right across the street.’
“Haha ok well atleast i know i have someone out here that can help me get through this.”
“ haha yea i'll be right by your side. Well goodnight i hope you feel better in the morning, and if you're up for it i'll show you around the town see what's going on down there.”
“ Thanks hope you have a good night too and yea i would like that.”
