The Ghost
As Alanis walked down the road from school all she could think about was going on a new adventure. She loved going on adventures, and had planned on going on one tomorrow after school. She thought about how she was going to invite her best friend forever to come with her on her Fan-mazing adventure.
After school, Alanis was more than ready to go on the adventure to her secret place. She had asked Jeff to come with her and of course he nodded with approval. Now they walked together through the woods and soon saw a clearing. Alanis longed to talk to Jeff without people calling her a freak. She use to talk to him everywhere, even at school, not the best decision. Jeff is a ghost and she could see him as clear as she could see anyone else.
“It’s a super power. It’s a super power. It’s a super power.” She thought to herself, but deep down it still wasn’t convincing her.
“What?” asked Jeff obviously concerned by the look on her face.
“Oh nothing.”She responded. She didn’t have any intention of telling her friend about her problems. “Why am I the only one who can see you?” she finally asked.
“I have no idea…but clearly there’s something special about you.” He said around the cunning smile that always made her feel better.
“Not helping.”Alanis rolled her eyes.”People are just afraid of others that are different, if only there was a way to make them understand…” Her thought ended short when their destination was finally in view. “It use to be an old castle, now all that’s left is that tower, and we’ll-I’ll have to climb, since you can fly.” Alanis beat Jeff to the top because she had climbed this tower every time she felt lonely, which was often, and she wasn’t even out of breath.
“Wow! You are fast!” Jeff gasped exasperated. “And this place is so cool.”
“Yeah I’ve made it that way! I well, come here a great deal of the time. Alanis said sheepishly. “Whenever I feel lonely, so most of the time.” She thought to herself.
When Jeff studied her face he knew something was wrong. Her usually big green wondering eyes, looked dull. Her normally happy vibe seemed to be totally diminished. Even her 4 foot long hair looked more flat than usual. He knew her well, even though they are only eleven, for they’ve been friends ever since she was three. He of course never would age, and never has.
“Okay, I know something is up.” Jeff stated as he waited for an answer, but she only looked at the stoney ground. She suddenly looked up at him with a happy smile.
“You have to see this,Jeff! You have to!” Alanis yelled full of excitement. She jumped and ran as fast as she could down the long stairs. Jeff cept up well, and when Alanis stopped short he was so startled, he ran right into her.
“Oww” They both groaned in unison, when they tumbled to the ground. Jeff got up fast and helped Alanis up after he apologized. Alanis led Jeff across the great hall to one huge door in the palace tower.
“This door right here is bigger than all the rest, as you can see.”Alanis said as she unlocked the door with a bobby pin. It creaked open slowly with a loud “Errrechhhh!”Inside was a huge throne room. It had three chairs, one being for a king another for the queen, and one for the princess.
“Wow! I can’t believe this is the first time you’re showing me this place.” Jeff said astonished. “This is certainly the coolest place I’ve ever seen.”
“I know I really should’ve shown you before.” Alanis said “I guess it is pretty cool.” She added with a small shrug.
“Show me the rest!” Jeff exclaimed.
Alanis showed Jeff each individual room, each with a new waiting surprise. One room had a bedroom, definitely fit for a king. It had had a big bed, a window that had a vanity by it, a wardrobe, and a super big bathroom. Another room had only another door in it, which led to the back of the palace. It was so green out there. There were so many flowers and wildlife.
“This is so wonderful. Let’s make this our special place.” Jeff flashed that smile again.
“Okay that’d be great. I would love to share it with you.” Alanis said happily.
Jeff could tell that Alanis was feeling better. He noticed that her hair wasn’t as flat and her eyes were sparking behind her glasses. That made him happy.
When Alanis got home she stopped when she heard her parents talking.
“It’s normal, walt.”
“Don’t you think that she’s getting too old to be talking about imaginary people, Renae.” Her mom hesitated before answering “Well I don’t know, she’s always been different, Walt, you know that.”
“Maybe, but maybe she needs help. Psychological help.” Her father said sadly.
“No! It hasn’t come to that yet.”
“Okay. You’re probably right. We’ll give it time.”
Alanis ran up the stairs to her room. She couldn’t believe that her parents were talking about her.
“They’re right. They’re right. There is something wrong with me. Alanis thought full of sadness.Just then Jeff appeared in her room. He looked at her, and instantly knew something was wrong.
“Alanis? Are you okay?” Jeff asked worried.
“Jeff, I’m a freak. Kids at school hate me, and now so do my own parents.” Alanis cried.
“What? That’s crazy talk. There’s no way that your parents hate you. You are a great person, whether they realize it or not. I’ve noticed for sure. We’ve been friends forever, even if no one else see me.”
Alanis wiped her eyes,”Really?”
“Really.” Jeff answered with that amazing smile. “ come outside and look at the stars with me.” They both went behind Alanis’s house to sit on the hill.
“One day, I’ll make them all see you,Jeff, then they will understand me.”
“If they do or don’t it’s fine either way, because you can see me. Remember when I told you how I died?” Jeff asked.
“Yeah of course.” Alanis said looking at the sky.
“Well, I had been inside my mom’s car when we crashed suddenly into another truck. I don’t remember much after that because I blacked out. My mom and sister survived, and I am grateful eternally for that.” Jeff said.
“That’s horrible Jeff. I am glad I met you though. You always know how to make me happy. I’m going to start being more optimistic like you. Alanis said as she hugged Jeff.
The next couple of weeks were great for Alanis. She went to the Palace everyday after school with Jeff and even told her parents about him.
“Mom. Dad. I know you don’t understand it, but I see ghosts. My favorite one being Jeff. He is my best friend, and has taught me the most amazing things. I heard you guys talking about me a couple weeks ago, but I’m not extraordinary in anyway, I just can see the things no one else can. I use to get upset with myself, and thought that there was something wrong with me, but I now realize that there’s not, I am just me. That's okay with me now. I am more happy than I’ve even been in my whole life, so please accept the me that I’ve disliked my whole life until now. I owe everything to Jeff because he’s the one that made me understand that. I couldn’t ask for a better best friend.”
Alanis’s parents were so shocked, and agreed that seeing ghosts maybe wasn’t such a bad thing afterall. Even Though,Alanis still didn’t have any friends at school , it didn’t matter to her anymore. She walked taller and smiled brighter, she couldn’t be more happy. She vowed to Jeff that she would never doubt herself again. Jeff was her best and only friend and she was eternally grateful.
