Her Mistake

It was Maya’s second years at UCLA and finals for her just ended. Her stress level was slowly wearing away and she couldn’t be more thankful. The sun was out, and it shined on Maya’s beautiful brown skin. She and her friends, Joy and Michelle, were walking around campus trying to figure out what to do before the party that night. They settled on getting some ice cream to help with the hot weather.

“Sooo.. How’s it going with Trey,” Joy asked Maya while they were standing in line.

“It’s pretty good. He actually asked me if I wanted to meet his parents awhile back,” Maya responded. Trey was Maya’s boyfriend for 5 months. He was also black, had pearly white teeth, dough brown eyes and his body looked as if it was crafted by God himself.

“Oh wow. That’s a pretty big step. How do you feel about that?” Michelle asked, after ordering her ice cream.

“ I mean… We’ve been together for quite some time now, so it doesn’t shock me. It’s just weird how fast this is all going,” Maya said paying for her ice cream.

They found a spot to sit down and continued the conversation.

“ Yea. It seems like it was just yesterday that we met,” Maya paused thinking about their time spent together, “ I guess time really does go by fast when you're having fun.”

Hours pass until it comes time for the party. Trey called Maya and told her he would pick her and the girls up from her dorm room, just to call when they were ready. She settled on a yellow skin tight dress with white vans to match. Her natural hair was out and she made sure to lay her baby hairs before it was to late. She called Trey when they were all ready and he pulled up to Maya’s dorm in his all white 2017 Range Rover.

“Hey,” Trey said, opening the door for Maya. He could not keep his eyes off of her.

“Hey babe,” Maya said, pecking his lips while hopping in the car. He then opened the back door for Joy and Michelle and they thanked him. He hoped back in the car, put his seat belt on and drove off.

When they made it to the party, they found their group of friends and started conversing about how they were happy that finals were over.

“Babe, I’m gonna go get a drink. Do you want anything?” Trey asked Maya, blowing smoke out his mouth from the hookah on the table.

“No, I’m okay.” Maya said. He walked away in the direction of the bar.

“Who’s that?” Maya heard Joy ask. She looked in the direction that Joy was staring and saw a cute white boy with brownish-black hair and the most alluring eyes she had ever seen. They were green, but with a mix of blue and brown. As if he could feel eyes on him, he turned and saw Maya. And it was like a magnetic connection the way their eyes held each others.

“Mayaaa… Earth to Maya..” Joy said waving a hand in front of Maya’s face until she blinked out of the stare.

“What was that?” Joy asked Maya, clearly seeing the eye connection she just made with the random guy.

“What was what?” Trey asked coming back with a drink in his hand.

“Nothing,” Maya answered quickly.

“It was most definitely something,” Michelle said, hopping in the conversation.

“You guys, it was nothing,” Maya stated aggravatedly. She didn’t want Trey to worry over it, because knowing him he would make a big situation out of something small.

They continued to argue about it when they heard a faint voice whisper,

“Hi.”

They looked in the direction and Maya’s eyes once again connected with the boys. This time Trey saw it.

“How can we help you?” Trey asked, making Maya and the boys eyes break away from each other.

“I just wanted to introduce myself. My names Lucien,” He said to the group while watching Maya. The way he kept his eyes on Maya didn’t sit right with Trey.

“Hi Lucien. I’m Joy. This is Trey, Michelle and Maya,” She said pointing at herself, then everyone else.

“Well, it was nice speaking to you Lucien, but I think it’s time you go,” Trey said angrily.

“Trey,” Maya whined while looking at Trey.

“I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to anger anyone. I just transferred and figured I should try and make some friends while here,” Lucien said looking at Trey.

“You're not ‘angering anyone’,” Michelle paused using quotations, “It’s just that Trey here gets very overprotective when it comes to his girl,” She finished.

“Yeah. Don’t worry about him. He’s just being a a**hole,” Joy said.

“Want to get a drink with me?” Joy asked him. Maya looked at Joy then at Lucien and thought that they would make a cute couple.

“Yea, I’d love to,” Lucien said and walked with Joy to the bar.

“Don’t say anything,” Maya said knowing that Trey was going to do exactly what she didn’t want him to do in the first place.

“You can’t expect me not to, when you were basically drooling over the kid,” Trey responded.

“Can we not argue please. We were having a good time and our song is playing,” She paused while hearing to Lil Baby’s famous song, ‘Close Friends’ play.

“Just don’t overthink it. It was nothing babe,” Maya reassured Trey then kissed him.

“Okay. Fine. Just know that I will beat anyone's ass in here if they try something like that with you again,” Trey jokes.

“I know you will,” Maya giggled while saying.

The party ended on a good note after the incident. Joy and Lucien traded numbers and from the looks of it, they hit it off quickly. Trey apologized to Lucien about jumping to conclusion as fast as he did and Lucien accepted the apology. In all, they were all going to be good friends.

And that's how the next couple months went. Lucien and Joy started dating and Michelle eventually found herself in a relationship with a girl named Kala. They would all go out on dates together, party together, just having fun with each other. Everything was all good until the day of  June 19th.

It was summer break and the group decided to take a trip to Las Vegas. They rented a van and took the 4 hour drive straight to Vegas. They got there around 10:00, and no one was tired surprisingly so they looked for the first club that would allow them in.

Time went by fast and before they knew it, It was 4 in the morning and they were drunk off there assess. It was a miracle that they even made it back to their hotel rooms in one piece. With the 3 rooms reserved, Joy somehow ended up sleeping in the room with Michelle and Kala, Maya and Trey in one which left Lucien in a room by himself.

While Trey slept on the bed, Maya wandered out the room and knocked on the closest door which Lucien happened to be in. He opened the door and stared at Maya in her pajama shorts and big white t-shirt.

“Hey, sorry. I can’t sleep. I guess you can’t either,” Maya questioned Lucien seeing that the TV was softly playing in the back.

“Yeah. I’m watching ‘The Office’ if you want to join,” Lucien told Maya.

“Okay. Thanks,” She said, walking in the room.

“Where’s Joy,” She asked when she noticed her not on the bed.

“She fell asleep in Michelle and Kala’s room. I just left her in there,” Lucien responded while sitting on the bed. Maya nodded and pointed to the bed asking if she can sit and he shook his head yes.

“Ohh… This is my favorite episode,” Maya said. It was the episode where Jim and Pam kissed at Casino Night.

“I’ve re-watched this show twice now and as much of a wimp as it makes me seem, I can never get over this episode,” Lucien said to Maya, who giggled. Lucien smiled at the sound of her laugh which he could never get over.

Over time Maya ended up laying on the bed with Lucien and the scene they were both waiting for came and it got queerly quiet. Lucien couldn’t take his eyes off of Maya’s face and Maya felt him staring and turned to him. And it was like the first night they met, when their eyes just stared into each others. Then it happened. Lucien pushed his lips against Maya’s and pulled away looking at her to see if she was against it. But when he saw that she wasn’t in any mood to push him back he kissed her again and this time she kissed him back.

He pulled his body on top of hers and they continued to make out. First went Lucien's shirt, then Maya’s and slowly they were both naked as the day they were born.

Lucien looked at her one more time to make sure that she wouldn’t protest before he continued his actions. They were both in a moment of bliss and lust, at least that’s what they kept telling themselves, yet they both knew it was more than that.

Then came the next day. Lucien and Maya were both sleep with the TV’s soft murmur in the background. Joy was in the room slowly waking up. Her head felt as if someone was knocking on it with a hammer. She slowly got up off the floor when she heard a knock on the door that woke up Kala and Michelle. She slowly made her way to the door and looked through the peephole seeing Trey standing there with a worried look on his face.

“Hey. Is Maya in here?” Trey asked.

“No, I thought she was in the room with you,” Joy said confused.

“She was, but she’s not in there now,” Trey worriedly said.

“Did you try calling her?” Kala asked from in the background.

“She left her phone in the room.” Trey responded.

“Okay, don’t worry. She probably just went downstairs to get breakfast. I’m gonna go shower and get Lucien, and we’ll meet back in here,” Joy said while Trey shook his head okay.

Joy got her room key from the table and walked to her room, not expecting what was to come next.

She cracked the door open and let out a loud gasp at what she saw. So loud that Trey walked over to see but automatically regretted his decision.

“What the hell?!” Joy yelled walking to the bed smacking Lucien awake.

“Are you serious?! Maya really!!!” Joy yelled.

Maya got up and the first thing she saw was Trey shaking his head in disgust while looking at her and Lucien.

“How could you?! You’re supposed to be my best friend and you're my boyfriend for God's sake!!” Joy’s voice could be heard through the entire hallway. Michelle and Kala walked to the door to see what was going on.

“Joy, just let me expl-” Maya asked on the verge of crying. She was holding the blanket to her chest knowing there was no way in hell the predicament she was in could be explained.

“What is there to explain?” Trey’s voice was heard in the background, becoming louder as he walked closer to the bed.

“I..I--I’m sorry.” It was the only thing Maya could think to say. Lucien sat next to her trying to think of something to diffuse the situation.

“Guys, we were drunk and things just happ-” He couldn’t even get his full sentence because Joy picked up the closest thing to her, which happened to be Maya’s phone with the homescreen of Trey and Maya on it, and through it at him. He ducked, but it still hit him in the lip.

“You told me there was nothing to worry about,” Trey said, sadly watching Kala. “And the sad part, is that I trusted you. I trusted both of you,” Trey then looked at Lucien.

Maya’s cries and repeats of ‘I’m sorry’s’ did nothing to the group standing around.

“Let’s go,” Trey said to Joy with his eyes still on Maya.

“They’re not worth it,” He said to himself more than anyone else and they all walked out the room.

Maya was sobbing at this point, snot dripping from her nose on the bed sheets. Lucien didn’t know what he was supposed to do.

“I’m sorry. I’m sorry. I’m sorry,” She repeated to herself.
