Do it Yourself
Walking into class on the first day of class, Lee was already embarrassed as he didn’t have all his supplies for school. Especially his laptop, as he needed that to be able to do any of his schoolwork. It was the school’s responsibility to supply computers to all the students, yet the administrators had underestimated the number of laptops need for this year and they did not have enough for all the students.
Lee knew that he had to go talk to the Vice Principal, Mr. Pickles, about his issue, walking to the Vice Principal’s office Lee went through how he was going to present his issue in his head. Walking through the door for the Mr. Pickles’ office, Lee was greeted with the sight of an overweight, sweating, balding man, and he could only gawk at the sight of the man. As Mr. Pickles was usually not sweating, blubbering mess and Lee could tell that the man was quite nervous about something, perhaps an issue that Mr. Pickles couldn’t solve.
“Mr. Pickles, I was wondering when the school would get more computers as I haven’t gotten mine yet. I need to have access to a computer for me to be able to get any work done in my class as most of my assignments are online.” Lee asked, with a hint of desperation and frustration at the situation he was in.
“Well Lee, I've just put in an order for more computers, as there are still quite a few students who haven’t gotten their computers yet. From what I understand the shipment of computers at the earliest should get here in about 2 weeks, but the shipment could take even longer than that.” Mr. Pickles said as he started sweating more, he also grabbed a handkerchief to dab at all the sweat gathering on his forehead.
“TWO WEEKS?!” Lee exclaimed, “but how am I supposed to be able to do my work, in two weeks I'll have so much homework that I won’t be able to catch up in all of my classes and I might fail this semester.”
“I’m sorry Lee but that’s the best that I can do for you, you’ll just have to ask your teachers if those assignments can be excused or just do them where you have access to a computer. Other than that, I can’t do anything for you, Lee.” Mr. Pickles explained with regret in his voice.
Lee left Mr. Pickles’ office disheartened and frustrated by the news that he just got, also by the fact that he would probably be weeks behind the rest of his peers and never catch up to them if he waited the minimum of two weeks. Because of the school's mistake, Lee’s grades were going to suffer as the administrators ordered not enough laptops. The rest of his day passes by in a blur as he had no energy to pay attention in class, and it wasn’t like he was learning anything as the teachers were just talking about the syllabus and not discussing any material.
Slamming the front door open it hit the wall with a resounding smack, Lee came into the kitchens sulking from his day at school, his mom took one look and immediately knew that Lee’s conversation with Mr. Pickles had not gone well at all. His mom steeled herself for the news that Lee was about to deliver, and she thought about how to approach the topic, but it was unneeded as he spoke first.
“Vice Principal Pickles told me that the soonest the school would get more computers is in about two weeks and even then, it’s not guaranteed that they’ll arrive at that time, it could take even longer than that,” Lee reported to his mom sullenly.
“Well since it will take it that long to get a laptop why don’t we just go to Best Buy and get you your laptop. Since you have that money from your summer job and if you don’t have enough, I can just pay for the rest and you can pay me back next summer.” his mom suggested.
“That sounds great mom,” Lee exclaimed.
Walking into Best Buy, Lee was excited and nervous about getting his laptop. Lee and his mom headed towards the laptop section of the store and he saw the laptop that he wanted to get. It was a nice Chromebook that was black and sleek design exactly what Lee wanted. Looking at the price Lee was conflicted about getting the laptop as it was slightly out of his price range that he set for himself, as it was eight hundred dollars, he had enough to pay for the whole price. However, if he did that then he would have very little money left to be able to buy miscellaneous things for himself. But his mom convinced him to get it and that he would pay six hundred and she would pay for the other two hundred. So, Lee bought the laptop and he was excited that he wouldn’t fall behind in class and that he would be able to watch Netflix in class.
Walking into class for the second day of school, Lee was happy with his decision to go out and get his laptop, as he realized that he couldn’t rely on the school to do what they needed to do as they proved it to him this year.
