48 Hours
The flashlight was bright in her bloodshot eyes,
her face pale and her skin wet and slimy.
Her hair stuck to her and face,
stringy and limp.
48 hours in the creek.
He beat her and left her,
bleeding and seeing
the sky turn from black to blue
and back to black again.
She cried out a few times,
until she was too exhausted to move.
Her muscles were sore, her heart slow.
She was limp, so limp.
And nobody would know,
the fate of this young girl,
still trying to grow.
Two more years to go,
before she was off on her own.
48 hours to go,
til she's gone for good.
She closed her eyes and dreamed a dream
that she was back at home.
Soft and warm in her bed again,
it would never happen again.
But then the voices came and woke her up.
She could barely turn her head.
There was a light, follow the light
they always said.
But this time the light didn't lead to heaven,
it led to life.
