Happy Birthday

The cupcake sat on the table in front of her, the single candle was burnt down to a little stub. She looked at all the wax dripping over the purple icing, the sprinkles stuck in it as the flame made the shadows dance all around it. The wax left a trail down the twisted, hot candle stem. A tear left a trail down her complacent face. She closed her eyes as the rest of the tears spilled from them. She leaned forward slowly as she whispered her wish and halfheartedly blew out her birthday candle alone... again. Happy birthday, darling.
