Fun on Friday the Thirteenth?
Fun on Friday the Thirteenth?
Ms. Greene had given me the death stare because she told us (me) six times to make our flash cards for all of our key terms from our texts book from chapter four. I looked around to see if anyone had any extra index cards. I looked behind me to see Paige Henderson (aka best friend stealer) scribbling in her notebook. When she looked around to see if anyone saw what she was writing apparently no one did except me. She was writing an invitation to her sleepover party which she has like every six months or something. Everyone always said it was really fun. All I saw was the letter “S” which probably meant Scarlet my old best friend. I walked over to her desk to ask if she had any extras.
“ Do you have any extra index cards?” I asked sweetly
She jumped a little and the invitation fell on the floor. It did not say Scarlet, it said Sawyer! I was never invited. She picked it up quickly hoping I didn't see,”Oh, sorry here,” she said.
At lunch Paige and Scarlet pretended I didn't exist well really just Paige Scarlet always does that. I sat down with Marie, Taylor, Amanda, Megan, and Stacie.
“ You know Paige is having her sleepover again, Sawyer, you’ll probably get invited.” Marie said. She was my best friend now along with Taylor. I didn't want to tell them I so I just said,
“Probably not, Scarlet hates me considering what happened and I haven’t talked to Paige in like, forever.” I noticed when I mentioned Scarlet, Marie turn her head away from me while Taylor looked nervous. I ignored them and talked to Stacie who would never lie or do something behind my back unlike Marie. Marie could be kind of a loner she would be friends with someone one second and joins someone elses friend group the next; she had been friends with me for a while so anything could happen. After the bell rang I walked to my locker and of course Scarlet was there. She had the locker next to mine. I remembered on the first day of school in fourth grade we got lockers so Scarlet kept switching to get a locker next to mine and we got it, but it backfired. We are assigned lockers in fourth grade as a part of the elementary school to get used to them up until seventh grade and in eighth grade we have lockers next to our first class. My school goes from kindergarten to eighth.
“ Was the math test hard?” Scarlet asked me.
“ Huh?” I said as if surprised she was talking to me. Well I was but I didn't want it to seem that way
“ The math test, is... it... hard?” she talked slow like I was stupid.
“ No,” I half lied, “ except for part ‘B’” I answered her as if she were my best friend.
“ Thanks,” she said was plugging in her combination. When I opened my locker and a shiney silver envelope fell out. Scarlet bent down to pick it up. I had a knot in my stomach. Would she scream, would she stop being friends with Paige, would she make a scene in the opened hallway where people actually respect me? time grew slower as she picked up the envelope almost as if each inch toward the floor was a half of an inch when she finally picked it up I thought she would rip it up but she said, “Here.” I looked at her almost confused at this point she thinks I’m stupid she shook the envelope. I took it out of her pink polished hand. I put it on my locker shelf as if nothing happened. As she left I tore opened the envelope. It said. “Sorry about the late notice but how would you, Sawyer like to come to my annual sleepover/ movie night at my house on Friday the 13th” I snickered at the date thinking thats how the night will be, Friday the 13th.
On Friday I packed my overnight bag when my mom told me it was time to go, so I ran out the door down the block breathed heavily for three minutes and then I rung the doorbell. Payton answered the door, she was one of my good friends we hung out a lot on the weekends but we didn’t sit together at lunch. When I walked in her mother greeted me and handed me a cupcake. She looked exhausted. I remembered that her mother never said no. I didn't know a lot of people well I wasn't good friends with them apparently they were looking for tin foil for a tin foil fashion show. I was glad Scarlet wasn’t there I didn’t want the night to be over before it started. We gossiped until Scarlet and Paige came down stairs. Scarlet widened her eyes at me then took a deep breath. I remembered that she does that when she is annoyed, mad, or confused. Paige saw and freaked out, but I could tell because she looked around a little panicked. Scarlet kept avoiding eye contact with me which told me she still holds grudge. I don’t know on what, but it looks like Paige knows. Scarlets’ icy green eyes made her look like witch. Paiges sky blue eyes were now storm probably raining regret. My mom said if i smiled someone else would smile, she was wrong My pale blue eyes stayed the same along with my blonde hair. It was going to be a couple minutes until Paige's’ dad got their in the van. In the movie theater Scarlet didn’t once talk to Paige so Paige talked to Payton and I. During the movie shared popcorn while Scarlet gave the occasional ‘shhhhhh’ to us. I was devastated when the movie ended.
When we got home Scarlet blurted out,” Why did you ditch our Friday night sleepover for Marie.”
“ I’m sorry she had my binder and when I got back you guys were gone.” I answered as if this had happened yesterday I knew she remembered it like I did.
“ Not that the one I texted to about after that.” she snapped
“ You never texted me in fact you had a sleepover with Paige instead.” Paige looked hurt until I said I didn’t mean it like that.
“ I remember she texted you and said wanna come over tonight for a sleepover with me and you ignored us.” Paige said, “ Remember I had just moved in and it was the week after you went to Marie’s for your binder.” All of the girls heads turned back and forth fascinated by the drama. I was furious, did she only invite me to prove they were right even though they weren’t.
“ I remember that Friday afternoon when you didn’t text me.” I shot back.
“ Then what happened?” Scarlet asked. Paige looked nervous.
“ I was at Marie’s house because my mom couldn’t pick me up!” I was confused now none of this made any sense. They remembered sending it and I remembered not getting it.
“ I have an idea!” Maddie shouted. Her mom and Marie’s mom are best friends so they spend a lot of time together. “Let’s call Marie, she doesn’t know I was invited and see what she thinks.” We all ran up the stairs Paige's room and dialed Marie’s number on Maddie’s phone. We put it on speaker and we all silent.
“ Hello?” Maries voice echoed.
“ Hey it’s Maddie.”
“ Hey whats up?” she asked
“ Nothing I have been wondering for like months what happened with Scarlet and Sawyer.
“ Oh,” she paused we all leaned in to hear what she was going to say. “ Well, Sawyer was at my house with Taylor who is apparently invited to Paiges sleepover with Sawyer but Sawyer didn’t tell me.” I looked at Paige and she whispered in my ear she would be here in ten. I smiled and then listened. “and Taylor went to go show Sawyer where the bathroom was. While she was gone I started playing with her IPhone and a text from Scarlet came in asking if she wanted to go to a sleepover tonight I accidentally pressed delete and she never knew. I was too embarrassed to tell her.” she took a deep breath in and sighed. We all looked at each other shocked. Scarlet motioned for me to go down stairs with her to talk.
“ Thats why I ignored you the next day because i thought you were ignoring me.” Scarlet said
“ Thank gosh.” In the middle of a magical moment Payton came running down the stairs saying that we should come up. We looked ateachther for what felt like a minute relizing everything was where it was supposed tobe. Looking ar her for that millisecond almost filled me in on every sleepover, school day, dance class, times at our locker that we had missed That second had fixed everything. Times like those make the world go ‘round.
Before we ran back upstairs and and listened to Marie, Taylor was here we filled her in as we ran up the stairs.
“ So anyway, I was already thinking about dumping Sawyer and Taylor.” I looked at Taylor and Taylor looked at me. We smiled. Apparently Marie was being mean to Taylor which explained why Taylor started sitting with Maddie at lunch.
Two months Later......
I looked at the cafeteria and and remembered the day Paige handed out her invitations. Now that I am looking at it, so much has changed. Marie is sitting with Gabi, Amanda, Megan, Stacie. Taylor is sitting with Maddie and her friends and I’m sitting with the people I would complain about.
I guess it was fun on Friday the thirteenth.
