In class when I was looking over our book list, I came across The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger. I practically jumped for joy when I came across it. I’ve been planning on reading this book for quite some time now, and I’m ever so happy I got it.
The Catcher in the Rye is about Holden Caulfield, a unique young man who has run away from Pencey Boarding School days before winter break. He embarks on a mission, to take a train to New York City, (his home town) and take it easy in a hotel before his parents receive notifications of his absence from the school.
Holden is a bit of a pessimistic person. He also believes he is more mature than he really is. Which just makes the story that much more interesting. These two things can often get him into quite a mess, in which he has to find his way out of. Holden is one of the most fascinating characters I’ve ever seen in a book. His dry sense of humor and his philosophical lifestyle make up for a thoroughly enjoyable read.
I would definitely recommend this book to anyone, even those seeking a bit of guidance in life. But caution: this book does contain sexual references and profound language. This book has showed me a thing or two, and even inspired me a bit. For Holden has showed me a bit of what it’s like alone in the outside world.
