August 2022 Fiction Contest: Lost
Vanya opened her eyes, and squinted against the light. She was alone. Well, not entirely.
“Mattie?” She asked, before scooping up the dog in her arms. He cocked his head at her as she buried her face into his neck and sobbed. “I thought I’d lost you.”
She suddenly became very aware of someone standing next to them. It’s was a little girl, holding a teddy. The girl smiled. “I’m sorry.” She said. “But you have to go now. Your accident wasn’t that serious.”
She awoke in hospital, with news she’d been in a coma. Mattie hadn’t survived the car crash.
