Celeste Nightshade Series
October 31st, 2011: 8:30 pm
“Come on Celeste! Hurry up we’re gonna be late for Tyler’s Halloween Bash!” calls Kristina, my loud best friend. We’ve been best friends since the 1st grade. She came up to me, and being the “say-everything-on-my-mind” type of person told me my eyes were weird. Ever since then we’ve been inseparable. I look into the mirror on my wall, my olive toned Italian skin, my long dark wavy brown hair is pinned up so I can’t cover my heterochromatic eyes. My eyes change from a startling gray to a deep indigo blue to a earthy leafy green whenever it wants. Right now for some reason they’re at their standard color of gray. I take one last look at my self in the witch costume our maid, Alejandra, picked up for me. I have no idea how Kristina got me to go at all. She knows I hate parties. And with everything happening this year, I’m not really in the partying mood. Ripping myself out of my thoughts, I rush down the stairs and see Kristina in her gorgeous angel costume. Her white blonde long waves fall down her shoulders like a waterfall. The white of the dress makes her eyes look even more beautiful than usual. Kristina is one of those girls people call “Popular” and has millions of friends at our school, yes she still hangs out with me. “You look amazing! I love your make-up it’s like sexy witch chic,” gushes Kristina. We go out the front door and jump in her sleek black BMW she got for her 16th birthday this year, and head to a party that will change my life forever.
11:30 pm: At the party
The music is blasting, everybody’s dancing and drinking. I stand in the background and watch all these people who I don’t even know having so much fun while I cant even get myself to talk to anyone. “Cele! What are you doing? Tyler’s been looking for you on the dance floor! It’s like you’re ignoring him Cele!” screams Kristina from behind me, startling me.
I knew Tyler had been searching for me all night, I had just been dodging him this entire time. Every girl in my school would die for Tyler’s attention, yet I’m the one who he chose.
“I’m sorry, I’m just not in the dancing mood.” I yell back. She gives me an annoyed glare and says “Well fine, I’m gonna go dance and have a good time unlike you.” She strolls away and disappears into the crowd of people on the dance floor. The moving bodies and flashing lights start to give me a massive headache. All the fumes from the fog machines and the smells of the make-up, colognes and perfumes overwhelm me. I race outside for a breath of fresh air. I take in my surroundings and only see darkness and the twinkling lights of the bright stars. The moon, full, bright and beautiful in its own eerie way has me escaping time. The wind picks up and starts swirling around me slowly. I see trees, grass, and flowers bloom up everywhere. Water starts to get in the mix of the wind around me. Then everything stops and a fire burns everything back to normal. That was amazing, I felt so powerful and at peace finally. Lost in my thoughts I failed to notice the presence lurking in the shadows. I look up to the sky and feel a source of empowerment, almost like the moon is literally filling me with life I never had before. The darkness wraps around me making the trials and tribulations of everyday life go away. Bam! A hard substance smacks the back of my head with a great force and I hit the grass instantly. I feel something prick my side. My vision becomes fuzzy and I feel someone grabbing me and hauling me over their shoulder. It is a man, I can gather only that much with my head spinning and black spots slowly covering my vision until I see nothing left and I fall into a deep, dark slumber.
Unknown Date, Time, and Place:
“Do you think she’ll ever wake up?” says a girls voice filled with concern. “I hope so. She looks nice and you need a friend who’s a girl Ari,” says another person. It’s a boy I already can tell that from the deepness of his voice. But the girls name is Ari? Hmm what an odd name, maybe it’s a nickname. Finally I pry my eyes open and the lights almost blind me. I look around and I see the owners of the voices I had heard, they both look unfamiliar. The girl has long brown curly hair, olive skin, and hypnotizing hazel colored eyes. The boy has a Clark Kent/Superman jet black kind of hair, fair skin, and melt-worthy earth brown eyes. They both look around 16, like me. “She’s up! Oh my gosh, I thought you were dead!” the girl says gleefully. The tall boy nudges her with his elbow and she yelps from surprise. “OW! Why’d you do that Dame!? That hurt!” mumbles the girl, while she rubs her side. “Please forgive her.” he says to me, “She’s a lot to take in. Well, I’m Damien Matrikov and this is Ariadne Camais,” he tells me as he helps me up from the little white cot that I had been lying on. I look around and I gather that I’m in a…. School clinic? “Where am I? What is this place? What happened to me? All I remember is being at my friend Tyler’s Halloween party.” Ariadne and Damien look at each other, then back at me with sad looks, like they know exactly what I’m going through. There’s a long awkward silence, until finally Ariadne speaks up and says “This is the Meglio School Of The Talented. Its for teens who are…. special….” her voice fades and Damien picks up the sentence for her, “Special meaning… having powers. For instance I can control the element of Earth. Ari can control Air or Wind.” What? I think. What do “powers” mean? What does he mean by “he can control Earth, and Ariadne can control Air? I give them a severe look of confusion on my face hoping that they will understand that that means to elaborate on the meaning of “powers”. “What? That makes no sense. What do you mean by “special powers”?” I demanded. They looked at me with reflection clear in their eyes. That was when Ariadne did the unbelievable. She started making small finger motions in a circle and air literally started spinning around in a mini tornado. My mouth dropped open and my eyes bulged. I was amazed! She could conjure up a baby tornado with the twirl of her fingers! “That was AMAZING! How did you do that? Can I do that? What can you do Damien?” I said in awe. We all started laughing together at the ridiculousness of my amazement. “Here come with us. The dean told me that you’re my new roomie anyways. Let us give you a tour of this grand school and your new home,” Ariadne said happily. We leave the clinic and walk down the beautiful hallways, that are filled with paintings and pictures. “Why are we here?” I ask. “Well, our principal, Dr. Meglio wants us to learn how to control them. But besides that we really don’t know” Damien explains. I question why some random man would just take a bunch of teenagers with crazy powers under his wing. Dropping the subject immediately, Ariadne and Damien babble on and on about the school as I pretend to listen. I look at all the students, teachers and the wonderful art everywhere. It was when I got so lost in the ceiling sculptures of the cherubs, that I ran smack into someone. “Ow! Oh my gosh I’m so sorry! I wasn’t looking where I was going.” I blindly say to someone. I then look up and see him. Jesse Garcia, one of the most gorgeous guys I had ever seen. I could tell he was Hispanic from his smooth brown skin and deep brown eyes that just made me want to melt. He had long, luscious, curly black hair pulled back into a ponytail that accented his perfectly carved jaw line. I thought I was in love. “Celeste? Celeste!” Ariadne says pulling me from my trance. I’m so embarrassed! Who just stares at people like that?! “Hi, I’m Jesse Garcia.” he says and holds his hand out to me to help me up. I take his hand and pull myself up. He looks down to me and gives me a warm smile. “And your name is?” he asks. I sputter out “Celeste, Celeste…. uhhhh Nightshade .” He holds his hand out and says “Well, Hello Celeste Nightshade. Welcome to M.S.O.T. Hope you have a great first day” he says warmly. As he walks away he winks his perfectly lashed eye and disappears in the crowd. I turn toward Ariadne and see her mouth open and eyes open. “That was Jesse Garcia! Like the hottest boy to ever come to this school! He just talked to you! YOU GUYS SHARED A MOMENT!!! AHH!” screams Ari. I look to Damien and he seems completely unfazed by Ari’s crazy outburst. He looks back at me and just shrugs like it’s normal. Can I even call anything in my life normal anymore? We finish the walk to my new room that I share with Ari. Her side of the room is very cultural and filled with pictures and postcards. I look to my side and see absolutely nothing except a desk, a laptop, a nice bed looking so comfortable, I jump into it without a word to Ariadne or Damien. My eyes slowly start to droop from severe dreariness. That was the moment I realized how tired I really was. I swiftly drift off into a deep sleep and forget my past, present, and don’t think twice about my future.
