China’s problem has become the world’s problem. Sulfur dioxide and nitrogen

oxides spewed by China’s coal-fired power plants fall as acid rain on Seoul, South Korea,

and Tokyo. Places that have this kind of pollution are considered as catastrophic,

compared to china they are normal. In cities like china people rarely see the sun; children

killed or sickened by lead poisoning or other types of local pollution. Environmental

regulation in Beijing, Shanghai and other leading cities is extremely necessary for 2008

Olympics.


Chinese Olympic organizers criticized US athletes who are bringing their own food

to the Games in Beijing this summer instead of trusting local cuisine. The United States

Olympic Committee is planning to transport its own produce because of fears about the

pollution on food in China and the heath of their athletes. Kang Yi, the head of the food

division for the Beijing Olympic organizing committee, said. “We have made lots of

preparations to ensure that the athletes can get together at the Olympic Games.” Other

countries are thinking about bringing their own food after this serious health problem in

this country. Tang Yunhua, a spokeswoman for the Beijing Municipal Office for Food

Safety, said: “The standards for Olympic food safety are much stricter than international

standards.”


Another big issue is the contaminated air; officials in the United States, Australia

and Canada have indicated that their athletes will not be using masks during competition.

A BOA spokesman said later Thursday that the decision about athletes wearing masks

had still to be taken no matter what. Gold medalist Michael East said he was not sure

about the potential benefits of 'smog-masks'. And he will not use it.


Mr. Steven Spielberg said “We are all hopeful that the Chinese authorities will have

addressed those issues by August so the athletes are not put in a position where the

measures we have put in place have to be deployed”.



China is taking drastic actions like cutting the air pollution during this year

Olympic. So a new standard for car emissions will be enforced from March 1, a new type

of less-pollution petrol will be available too, cars and buses that fail the checks will be

banned from the streets. More than 1,300 petrol stations in Beijing are being upgraded to

cut fumes and the rest will be shut down. In addition, the Chinese authorities have

ordered five provinces around Beijing to join the efforts and reduce industrial activity for

two months before the Games.


China hopes such drastic measures can help them to not have a heavy pollution to

harm the athletes, and we expect to have a good and healthy Olympics.
