Have you ever had a time where you needed a place to keep your belongings but didn't have anywhere to put them in your middle school? At Tumwata Middle school there are no lockers. In the school there are just small cubbies that are not useful because of the risk of belongings being stolen and nobody uses them. While it's true adding lockers costs a lot of money and includes making big changes to the school, lockers are needed at Tumwata Middle School. This will help students with their bags for after school activities, giving a secure place for belongings and finally lockers will decrease the risk of back problems.

To begin, lockers are needed in Tumwata Middle School because middle schools offer many after school activities that include extra clothing and bags. Caring around your bag increases the risk of it being stolen or being forgotten. That is why having lockers will help with these moments and times where you need to lock up a belonging.  Having your own locker for those activities like dance, track, or even wrestling will keep those bags in a place you know where it is, and where those belongings will stay untouched. I have had my own personal experience of asking the office to hold my sports bag and dance bag, but they said no. I was told that the office was not my locker, but we have no lockers so where else would I keep those extra bags?  Our school does have P.E. lockers but they are too small. They are only meant for your P.E. shirt, shorts, and shoes. This makes it so that the P.E. lockers are not useful for these extra bags. That's why having lockers throughout the school hallway would help with students. 

Equally important, carrying around your backpack can cause back problems. Carrying your backpack around throughout the years and the time students spend at school, can start to cause pain in the lower and upper back. This pain is uncomfortable and makes the students in much agony. Having the bag on your back can also create poor posture. Strength throughout your body can weaken from this. Finally, functional scoliosis can also occur from your backpack being on one of your shoulders. When you have your backpack on one shoulder the uneven weight can cause a curve in your spine. This will harm your body. Lockers would decrease the risk of this happening to middle school students, and help them in the long run. 

Next, lockers provide a secure place for your personal belongings. Theft happens too much in middle schools, and it brings much worry and stress when students lose something. Privacy is another big part of having lockers. Some things you bring to school are personal and not needed for everyone to see. Lockers provide privacy and keep personal belongings in a safe place. This safe place can help with the students feeling more comfortable with their belongings and what they need for school. Lockers are secure because you would have your own code and this code would only be known by you and maybe your locker partner if you had one. Teachers also are able to open lockers if needed in case people are bringing in items that should not be at school and are causing problems. Overall having a locker is a secure and private space. 

While it’s true adding lockers would cost a lot of money and would include lots of changes to the school, students need these lockers for their health and for helping them out in their daily school life. Overall there are more advantages of having lockers such as, having privacy, helping out with extra school bags,and less back pain are all the advantages to having lockers. The cubbies are not used and not a safe, secure place. This shows that lockers would be better for the students, and the school.  In summary Lockers will help students and are needed at Tumwata Middle School.
