Same-Sex Marriage
In 2015 gay marriage just became legal in all fifty states in America. It wasn't an easy journey because there were pros and cons and many protested whether it should be legal or not.
Religious people are the ones who most strongly disagree with same-sex marriage. Of most religious people, though, 33% are opposed, but 62% are in favor of same-sex marriage (“Changing Views of Same-Sex Marriage”). But in the Bible Leviticus, 18:22, it states, “Do not practice homosexuality, having sex with another man as with a woman it is a detestable sin” (Leviticus 18:22). It's a disagreement between religion and human rights.
Discrimination is another big issue with same-sex marriage. “You should not treat lesbians or gays like lesser beings and it's not okay to treat them with less respect” (“Gay Marriage ProCon”). But another side to that is the institution of marriage was traditionally defined as between a man and a woman (“Gay Marriage ProCon”). To compare discrimination in other countries besides the United States on same-sex marriage is interesting. It is also a big issue with seventy-nine countries not allowing gay marriage, but twenty-two countries that do (“Changing Views of Same-Sex Marriage”). Some countries don't even allow homosexuality, and those who are get punished with the law or get stoned to death ("Here Are the 10 Countries Where Homosexuality May Be Punished by Death").
Some would say that allowing same-sex marriage would follow with same-sex couples wanting to continue with families, just like any heterosexual couple, and for many same-sex couples this would be true. There are many people who think that same-sex couples should not be parents, while some disagree. The side that states homosexuals shouldn't be parents, say those children would suffer more difficulties, such as sexual abuse and unemployment later on in life (“Gay Marriage ProCon”). But some disagree with that statement,. such as those interviewed by the University of Melbourne researchers. They did a study showing that children raised by homosexuals scored 6% higher than children raised by heterosexual parents in social and academic competence (“Gay Marriage ProCon”).
One Solution to this issue for everyone to get what they want is for couples to be put into three different types of categories of marriage; “1 traditional marriage, the standard model that we all know by one man and one woman known as husband and wife. Secular marriage, (is this #3?)for lgbteers and atheist and if so multiple partners, these people are those who aren't involved in any biblical practice. It cannot take place in a church or house of worship. #3 Religious marriage defined as in the bible with one man and one woman also known as holy matrimony” ("Gay Marriage Solutions"). Each category has their own rules, so they can all respect each other.
Same-sex marriage is really a discussion on religion or the acceptance of those who do not represent the “traditional” man and woman couple in the 20th century in this new society. Even though it's legal in all fifty states, for some people there are still major issues with same-sex marriage. .
