The Broken arm
“BAAM” the door closes harshly as I dart out of the house. I rushed to get onto my Onewheel and ride down the street. I was going to go ride with my brother, Porter around the neighborhood. We then decided to go onto a dirt path that takes us to the area that we go often. As we were going down the path I started to feel unsteady and began to wobble and then just a few feet later it happened. I had run over a big patch of roots and began to fall. I stuck my arms out at the last second to stop my body from hitting the ground. I could instantly feel the pain shoot up my arm. I looked down at my arm and knew that it was broken. My arm was crooked like I had never seen it before. My heart beat began to speed up as I started to freak out. I stood up as the pain grew and grew. I didn't dare to move a muscle in my arm knowing that it would just increase the pain. We slowly walked down the path back to the street. I quickly ripped out my phone and with my shaking hand, I dialed my dad's phone number and just after the third ring he picked up. I immediately started shouting through the phone that he needed to come pick me up and take me to the hospital. I hung up the phone and slowly started to sit down. And then just 5 minutes later I could hear the rocks underneath the car crunch as he came around the bend in the road. I hurried into the car and we left straight for the hospital. I could see in the distance what looked like potholes after potholes and sure enough, I was right. I could feel the car go up and down as we drove down the road and increasing pain in my arm. We finally arrived and rushed into the hospital. After what felt like hours the door handle to the room I was in started to move and I could hear the doctor just outside of the room. Just a few seconds later a young doctor walks in to look at my arm. He then goes on to ask if it was ok if he could touch my arm, and I quickly replied yes. I then watched closely as he tweaked my arm to the left and right as pain shot up my arm. The pain was like I had never felt before. The doctor then went on to tell us what was going to happen next. After another 30 minutes a nurse came in to give me an I.V. for the medicine. She also broke the news to us that it was going to be 2-3 hours until the surgery. My heart dropped as the words came out of her mouth. I had come this far and I wasn't even close to the finish line. For the next 2 hours, doctors would come in every once in a while to check in on me and then it was time to go. The same nurse as last time came and exclaimed that she was going to take me to a different room for the surgery. She drifted the bed around the corners and right into some room off the hallway. Not even five minutes later at least 5 doctors all walked into the room and started to talk about what sounded like gibberish rish to me. I started to feel something pumping through the I.V. And almost instantly started to fall asleep. My head was swirling as I was coming in and out of sleep 30 minutes later with my arm all wrapped up and fixed. And after the 7th hour of being at the hospital, I was finally heading home. On that day I learned to be patient. Little did I know then that this injury was going to teach me a lot of things. It would teach me determination, teamwork and even perseverance.
