Ethiopian eating ceremony

Step 1: Tear a piece of injera (flatbread) with your hands

Step 2: Hold as much sauce as you can with your injera

Step 3: Feed it to your friends or family sitting around you.

While eating together, giving gursha to one another is fairly common. More often than not, these delicious mouthfuls of food are so generous that the person getting fed has to extend their hands to hold the droppings that fall from the gursha they have just been offered. While chewing, that person signs a thank you and maybe exaggerates by exclaiming that they loved every second of it. Of course, the giver is satisfied with the act of giving itself, but it will not be long before they themselves become the recipient of yet another generous mouthful.

Jokes are shared, ideas are exchanged, smiles are on everyone’s faces. One can feel the warmth and joy that is so present in the air. The love, care, sharing, and generosity of Ethiopian culture can be reflected through this very eating ceremony. The same values that become engraved in every Ethiopian’s heart.
