drive safely please

Whenever my friends or my family leave my house or they are driving, I always tell them, “drive safe, please”. They always wonder why I say that. I usually get the response of “I will” or “you always say that”. I don't want anyone to ever experience what I experienced when I was little- To lose someone in a way that should have never happened. That Christmas I didn’t know it was going to be the last one with the whole family. There's no way we could have known. Fast forward to April 21st, 2014. Both of my parents came to pick up my siblings and me from school. They were not talkative at all, with 99.1 the mix muffled in the background. But I was only 8. I  didn't know what was going on. We all walked inside, and then the silent truth came out. “Katie died.” The first thing I said was, “the one who was going to get married?”. In fact she was the one who was going to get married. Later that night, my family went to Culvers and got a ton of toys and ice cream. But no matter how many free toys or ice cream we got. Still, an empty void was in our family- a hole that can never be filled. So please, next time you are told “drive safe,” put down your phone and actually “drive safe.” So your loved ones don't have to go through the same pain I did.

My piece is about a death of a family member who was my cousin to who I was very close. It shows how I tell everyone to drive safely now and how this moment has affected me.
