Pool Day

In case you ever wondered what a horrible idea is, put yourself through the decisions of your average everyday middle school student. Kyle and his friends had quite the memorable experience.

School was out, a half day. The boys were looking forward to it for weeks, and escaped from the cold long days of winter. It was particularly warm for that time of year, yet snow still covered the ground. As Kyle, Logan, Jackson, Sam and Anthony sat around thinking about what to do, it finally hit them. “Let's go to the pond!” Exclaimed one of the boys. Now, anyone with common sense would say, a frozen pond in 45 degree weather probably isn't the best idea. And you would be right! They set out anyway, and by the time they got there sweat was beading off their foreheads, hunched over gasping for air. But there it was. Glistening in the sun like a sheet of glass. Little did they know that shimmer wasn't just ice, it was water sitting on the top of it.

Sam walked over to the edge, lifted his foot and swiftly placed it on the ice, followed slowly by the other foot. He looked up with a grin on his face, and set off for the middle of it. “Come on guys, look, it's fine.” That was all anyone needed. One by one they touched down on the ice. Minutes passed by, and everything seemed to be going quite well for the boys, until it didn’t. Anthony and Sam were walking next to each other, and the next moment, they were gone. The ice erupted underneath them, sending them plunging into the freezing cold water. The boy's eyes shot open, filled with horror, no clue what to do. Kyle turned and ran to shore, praying they didn't make the problem worse. Water splashed everywhere as Sam and Anthony frantically clawed at the ice, but it was to no avail. It kept giving way, until finally they reached thick enough ice. They scrambled back to dry land, shaking in their clothes as water poured off of them, all while smiling and laughing, still in shock of what had just happened.

If you read this and wonder, how dumb can you be? Don't be too quick to judge, because I was a part of it. You could argue that I was the only one smart enough to run back to land so as not to make the problem worse, but every once and a while I still get flack for it from them, so who knows?
