It was a bewildering day when music vanished. Elevators stood silent, rooms were quiet, and stores that were once filled with sounds were now deadly still, with only the sound of people talking. The rumble of voices was distracting, and when they quieted down, an eerie mist loomed over everything.

School hallways were awkwardly quiet, and classrooms were too. The only sound students heard during tests was the buzzing of the bright lights. Band, music composition, orchestra, and choir were no longer classes. Music theory felt like a myth. The entire day at school felt like a test day, and bus rides back home were painfully dull. Silent reading was now even quieter, and the chaos of loud music playing at bars and restaurants was a thing of the past. Nothing felt real, and movies were awkward to watch because there was no background noise to tie everything together. Horror films were even more terrifying.

The only sound on the sidewalk was cars speeding by. There was no loud bass coming from cars or the sound of guitars and drums jamming out. Not even the soft piano chords of classical music were apparent. The neighbor's garage was always silent, and you could tell that life was different. Slumber parties were no longer fun, just silence and talking. Everything felt uncomfortable because of the silence.

Saturday cleaning mornings felt like they took forever. Mothers just woke up their kids with yelling instead of early 2010s music. There was no longer any fun involved in anything. The world was now bland, colorless, and unbelievably dull. Silence was now the norm, and with everything that humans had to do during the day, there was nothing they could do to make it seem better.

You might wonder what would happen at concerts. Would you be jumping and screaming to nothing? I mean, the lyrics would still be there, but the melody would be gone. Would music turn into a kind of spoken word poetry? The lyrics would turn into the only thing that mattered. The emotion conveyed in the words spoken would somehow have to overpower the music that used to be there.

The world was now different, but not in a good way. Over time, we all adapted to living in a world without music and having constant ear stimulation, but it took a lot of learning and time. Music was gone forever, and only time would tell if it would ever return.

The author's comments:

The reason why I chose music for this essay was because of how important it is to me. Music gets me going every day, and I wholeheartedly believe that I could not live without it. I have been playing music ever since I was young, whether it was singing or mashing keys on the piano. I am 16 years old and I enjoy playing in the marching band, reading books, and researching medical topics.
