The Smell of a Memory
Isn’t it amazing how the brain works? How hearing one thing can take you back to three summers go or maybe even just to yesterday. It is truly amazing how that can happen. How one song can bring back a life time of memories or how one smell can take you somewhere you forgot you went. To me this is really interesting. How these things as little as they are can pop in to your mind and change everything. They can be the difference between doing the right thing or not. They can help you fall asleep at night or they can effect what you are about to eat or the things that you can see. One experience or experiences that you have over a period of time can effect you more then you think.
Let me explain myself a little more so you can see where I am coming from. Noises and smells are senses that can do a really good job of triggering emotions or memories. For example for me the rattling of ice cubes disbursing out of the ice dispenser is something that really makes me feel safe. I feel safe when I hear this noise because of when I normally hear it. I normally here the rush of ice cubes well I am upstair in my bed going to sleep at night. Every night my parents get fresh water with ice cubes before they go to bed. My emotions that are connected to this sound just occurred to me recently. It occurred to me that someday when I am off at college this is going to be something that I really miss. This sound, this one thing just makes me relax. Knowing that my parents are still awake and there well I am sleeping just comforts me well I am trying to fall asleep. I mean I would have a totally different feeling about ice cubes if thats what I heard right before somebody broke in to my house or something. Call me corky or whatever you like, but the sound of ice cubes triggers some comforting feeling in my mind. You would be amazed if you think about it how many little details in your day stick out when you think carefully. Things that you normally just don’t even think twice about. How you associate certain things with certain feelings is really interesting to me. Like I was saying before how the sound of the ice dispenser is something in my daily routine that just stands out to me in a good way. Another thing for me is my alarm clock going of in the morning which has a totally different effect on me it makes me mad and I want to ignore it. Little things like this you just don’t realize unless you think about them.
Smell is another sense that can be associated with things. To me houses have smells. My grandma’s house has a particular smell. I can’t explain it, but it is just a comforting smell to me I have been there so many times it just makes me feel safe. I associate it with good times with me family and safety. There are tons and tons of smells that really just pull our good memories bad memories and everything in between.
The smell of a Christmas tree or freshly baked cookies always reminds me of Christmas. I associate the smell of bugs spray or the smoke from a fire with camping. Everyone has there own associations, but at the end of the day everyone could pick out smells that make them feel safe, scared, angry. You name it and there is a smell that goes with it.
Association with smells and noises really interest me. It’s interesting how everybody has different memories they think about with one particular smell and how if you hear a song and it can take you back years and years. It is truly interesting how the brain works.
