Advice to New Students
Coming to a new country could be very scary but entering a new school with people you don’t know could be frustrated. I know this because seven years ago I was that student. In the beginning things were difficult because I did not speak the language. I started fifth grade not having any friends. I had great teachers who helped me and became my friends when I did not have any.
The best advice is to take it from someone who has experience the similar experiences that you are going through. In the beginning things are always hard and gets even harder sometimes. Coming to a new country or a state to live in, is mostly difficult if you don’t speak the language. There are few things that are very difficult in this case such as shopping because you don’t know where good things and bad things are. Attending school because if you get lost and you cannot find your way around, you have to get help from someone. The first time my family and I went to the mall my little sister got lost because it was so big and we did not know who to ask for help or how. Watching television could help you speak you learn the language fast. The best way to learn a language is to verbally communicate with friends so you could practice, practice makes it better. Also you have to want to learn and try, because if u don’t try it will make things way more difficult.
One of the worst things in life is going to high school without any friends, my freshman year that exactly what happen to me. Students usually address the new kids as “new girl”, or the “new boy”. My suggestion would be being you when you meet people and don’t change for anybody, make kids like you for who you are. The biggest mistake I see many new students make is they try to impress the other students and tell things that they would want to hear. When I was the “new girl” I tried being friendly and smile at them, which helped. Many other students know that it’s difficult for the new students and some try to help them out by showing them around the school. Also you should try being friends with student who have the same interests as you. Joining sports or clubs is another way to spend time with them afterschool could be a good way to make friends. Lunch is the worst for the new students but also it could be another way of making friends. If you don’t have any place to sit in lunch look for an empty chair and ask nicely may I sit here? It is also very important where you sit in lunch because it determines your friends.
Making a good first impression is the key because students will never forget it. New kids are not usually loud because they don’t know if they should or not. It is hard because you don’t know who you should talk to and you shouldn’t talk to. You will hear many stories about student my suggestion is you should not believe everything you hear. Also don’t rush things and trust kids easily and tell them you secrets. They might smile at your face, and you might think they are nice but then they might go and tell their friends. It took me three years to make few good friends that I could trust with my deepest secrets. You know what they say it is much better to have 4 quarters than 100 pennies.
Being the new student and not having any friends is the worst. It might be a pain but all you must do is be real and don’t pretend to be someone you’re not because it won’t get you anywhere. Try to be friendly to everyone in the school. You must give a chance to get to know everyone. Last but not least do not judge a book by it its cover. By that quote I mean don’t be prejudice against any student from their appearance meaning how they dress or the way their hairstyle is. If you spend your time judging them you would not have time to get to know them. In the beginning you might think they are weird and don’t talk to them but then you might end up being best friends. This has happen to me in the pass, so it taught me a lesson not to criticize anyone. If any new student reads this essay in the future I want to let you know that If I went through high school and made friends anyone can. You have to believe and trust yourself.
