The Time I Stood Idly By
Society will always have bad things happening to it. I personally think the worst thing about society is that we stand around waiting for good things to happen on their own. As a member of society, I once stood around instead of helping a fearful kid with a disability stand up for himself.
On day in 2nd grade at recess, I heard a group of four boys older than me laughing and yelling. When I turned, I remember seeing a guy with a mental disability getting picked on by a group of immature boys. In my head, I thought that someone would stand up against them. I kept glancing back at what was happening and waited like a useless object. Nobody came to help, and before I knew it, everyone went their separate ways.
Although I knew there was nothing right about what I witnessed, I still just stood there doing nothing to help. The right thing to do was to help out someone that needed it. I felt extremely guilty, probably even more than the boys that did it.
Sometimes I wonder if the people that do the crime are worse than the ones witnessing it and doing nothing. We tend to wait around for someone to do the dirty work for us, but we have to step up and be that person.

What inspired me to write this piece was that I noticed people wait around expecting others to step up.
