Never Again
It was a hot day in June in the beautiful city of New Prague Minnesota. My neighbor’s had asked my family if we would watch their house while they went on vacation to Yellowstone in Wisconsin. Of course we said yes because it’s the nice thing to do and they have done it for my family in the past. They gave us a key so we were able to get into their house to water their plants and make sure everything was okay inside the house.
During the time that we were watching my neighbor’s house, my father was also in the hospital because he had a blood clot in his thigh. They wanted to get rid of it before it moved anywhere else and was even more dangerous for him. So my father was in the hospital for many nights and my mother was gone for many days at a time to be with him in the hospital to make sure everything was going well with him, but mostly to give him some company. Since my parents were both gone during the days it was just all my four siblings and I left home alone.
My brother, Nathan, came up to me and asked me where mom was keeping my neighbor’s house keys and I took him to where she was keeping it, which was on the ledge next to the phone in the kitchen. The next day he says to me,
“Wouldn’t it be fun if we took the key and went over to their house and kinda snooped around in their stuff?”
I replied, “Don’t you think we will get in trouble for doing that?”
“No one will know because mom and dad are both gone and we can just tell the other girls we are going for a bike ride, and we will be home before anyone thinks anything of it.” he says
At that point I agreed with him because he is my older brother and I did trust him. So we found my sister’s and told them that we were going for a bike ride. We actually went over to our neighbor’s house and hid our bikes so my sister’s wouldn’t see them sitting outside and come looking for us. When we got over there and in the house we both immediately went and start looking through the cupboards, fridge and freezer for food. I came across some chocolate ice cream treats in the garage freezer that I have eaten a couple of times when I hung out with my the neighbor kids at their house. So I decided to have a couple and then, Nathan saw me eating them and went to take a few for himself.
In the mean time of looking for food throughout the house Nathan had gone on to their computer and started playing some music on youtube. I suggested to him that we should go home before we get in trouble and he just told me that we won’t get in trouble and that I need to calm down. So I decided to go downstairs to where the neighbor boys room was started looking through it and playing with their toys that they had in there. I was playing with their nerf guns that were laying around their room. At my house my parents never bought many of the nerf guns because there is only one boy in our family and he won’t even let us use his nerf guns because he thinks that we will break them. It was lot of fun because I took the gun upstairs with me and I was shooting Nathan with darts.
It started to get later in the day and we both figured that we should be heading home before our other sister’s will start wondering where we went. Also our mom should be coming home from the hospital soon and we don’t want to get in trouble by her. When, we got home our younger sister’s had asked us what took us so long, and we told them that we stopped and got water at McDonald’s because we forgot to bring some with us.
A couple days had past and it was the day that my neighbors were coming home from Yellowstone. When they got home my mom and I went over there house to ask how their trip had gone and to give them their key back. No more than two day after them being home my mom gets a call from them asking if any of us kids were in their house without our parents; my mom didn’t think so, but she asked us anyways. At first I lied about being over there because that’s what Nathan and I both agreed we were going to do. Finally, I couldn’t take lying to my parents anymore about this and so I told them that Nathan and I went over there while she was at the hospital with dad.
“Why did you go over there when I told you guys not too?” says mother.
I replied, “Nathan told me that it would be a fun and I trusted him and also thought it would be kind of fun.”
She was very disappointed in both of us for doing that after she had told us not to go over there. When she heard that one other their boys was missing money from his wallet in his room she got even more disappointed in us because she didn’t think that we would steal money from them. My brother and I both got grounded for the rest of the summer. We both had to pull dandelions by hand with a knife to get the roots out so they wouldn’t grow back. Never have I ever gotten in this much trouble before and wanted to take it all back. Getting in trouble by your parents is one thing, but having your neighbor’s think so poorly of me is a whole new thing that I wish I wouldn’t have had to experience.
