How can she smile and laugh with memories of such pain?
How can she love and trust with a life so insane?

Mother is mad so she is kicked and strangled
Only a bruised neck but her heart is mangled
She cries herself to sleep
Knowing she must run away
But remember me and come back one day
Run and break free
But don’t forget you are loved by me

Fury of past comes forward in what she felt
Her father’s girlfriend she strikes with a belt
Daddy defends his lover
Why does he love her?

Choked against the wall
And thrown like a doll
Does she matter at all?

Trembling with adrenaline
Wounds turning black and blue
She calls the police with shaky hands
So angry with you

Girlfriend presses charges and she fears what’s in store
Bruised and sore
She deserves more…

How can life be so mean?
She’s only thirteen

With a past of fear and hurt
There is a future of anger and aggression
She is told at her counseling session

But you don’t have to worry
I’ll be your best friend
And I’ll be there for you in the end
You can trust and tell me these things
And I will help you grow your wings
So you can fly off and be free
From these memories of misery
