The Dragon Curse
In a kingdom across the sea
Beneath an eternal midnight sky
Lay a world of gentle night
And towering mountains, so very high.
There, beneath the starry sky,
Stood the Mountains of the Lyre
And there lived a family of royal blood
Given the curse of a dragon’s fire.
A princess chosen, once a year,
One mortal maiden doomed to die,
Left out beneath the full moon’s light
Under an eternal midnight sky.
The youngest princess knew the curse,
But railed against it, fled her land,
Across the Mountains of the Lyre
And to a sea of burning sand.
But the curse flew after, on leather wings,
To that land of scorching sun
Where a burning sea of sand
Stretched to the horizon, on and on.
From the ashes of a royal life,
A warrior-maiden rose to fight;
She met and beat the dragon-curse
And brought down her people’s plight.
The triumphant conqueror, she returned
To the Mountains of the Lyre
Where they called her Hero-Queen
Beneath the stars’ cold diamond-fire.
