Inner Flames

A spark, a leap, a dancing flame

Unruly and unwilling to be tamed

An ember dancing in the night

Changing darkness into light

So small and fragile as many were

But passion stirred inside of her

As fires burned out from the start

Faith, hope, and love lived in her heart

It kindled the flame inside

While others died she survived

The flame that lives on within her today

Allows her to share her story in every way

Her inner flame burns bright as the sun

It’ll continue to burn until her time is done

It kindles the hearts of the young and the old

It burns brighter each time her story is told

And when the fire that burns within

Begins to sputter and grow thin

We pray that every second we existed

Was a time when we persisted

Through the ups and downs of life

No matter how much was filled with strife

Live every second as though it’s your last

To live in the present and not in the past

The author's comments:

This poem is dedicated to Magda Herzberger, a Holocaust survivor who survived 3 different concentration camps, Auschwitz, Bremen, and Bergen-Belsen. She shares her story through her books, and poems, and came to my school to tell her tale. Thank you, Magda, for coming, you are an inspiration to all.
