Shuffling tentacles grope blindly through
the swish, swish of an ocean cold.
The octopus has eight strong arms; you

never were one to see the day so blue,
and now, grown very old
shuffling tentacles grope blindly through.

A cane in front of you,
your tightening grip holds.
The octopus has eight strong arms, you

slip down the stairs in lieu
of operations and tubes. You are bold.
Shuffling tentacles grope blindly through,
swimming in an ocean blue.

Medication as a temptation greatly holds
the octopus has eight strong arms, you
are under the water, choking on rue.

Scream to the surface, so very cold,
shuffling tentacles grope blindly through,
the octopus has eight strong arms, you.

The author's comments:
This is a villanelle piece, merging dark ethereal imagery with stark fears of death and aging.
