I Do Not Understand

I do not understand
Why people are mean
The concept of “normal”
Why education is so unvalued by some people
But most of all
I do not understand
Why people fight,
Why there are wars,
Why we can’t all just get along and coexist peacefully
Why people enjoy war and don’t flinch
When they hear that hundreds were killed in an unnecessary act
One thing I do understand is books.
They are always there for you,
Old friends,
They are easy to bring with you
Wherever you go
And they never change on you.
They are familiar faces that are always comforting.
