"Poetry and art are when you take decades of thought and condense it into a nifty little portable carrying case that people can see and go 'Oooh, Ahh'... and then forget about it. But what does it matter, so long as YOU remember it?" ~ Bela

I hear the grating of an old engine
and the squealing of breaks gone bad,
and the stretching glare of the streetlights
illuminate the road shaped sad,

and the world is always rushing, rushing,
like a run in a stocking diving down.
Paint nail polish on it and run along,
and paddle up the stream to drown.

And the tail lights burn against the backs of cars
and the horns blare deep into the night.
The orange streets tremble beneath the rain
and the mud-splashed gravel takes flight.

And the world is always rushing, rushing,
up over my head in a flood,
and the grating sounds like wind-blown grass
and the stretching glare lights the mud.

The surface is naught but a distant dream.
Traffic lights glitter like glass.
The rain pours gently as white noise
and roars as the cars pass.

And the streets are left a muffled void,
nowhere to rush in the black.
And I trudge through the deluge-strewn grime,
resentment at my back.

The author's comments:
I thought of this while I was trudging up the street to the cornerstore in the rain. Go figure. I liked the idea, though. I tinkered a bit with it and wrote it out, and this is what I came up with. Any comments are welcome, but try to refrain from "it sucks" or "it's awesome". I prefer to hear WHY it sucks or is awesome. Oh, and I do try to take negative critique well, so please feel free to leave that, too. Thanks!

Thank you kindly, I appreciate it. It's pretty late here too. xD I'm glad my poetry's worth spending the wee hours on, it's a nice feeling.

As a side note, my name's Caroline. It just struck me that it was close to Carolyn. :3
