When I Went Outside
When I went outside to pick up a leaf
I became aware of a blowing tree,
a sweating runner,
a twittering
hummingbird
I did not stroll carelessly
across the sidewalk
like a hare racing
with a turtle,
instead I moved more slowly
Thinking of the things
that are most important to me,
Like a cow licks her calf with a warm
rough tongue
I realized
When my foot stepped down on the dry gray sidewalk.
