Chronology
i loved you in june
when you smiled slyly
from the shadows on your front stoop
in july you invaded
your scent infiltrated my senses,
sharing cigarettes and books
by pale, forgiving candle light
and in august
i clung to your hand
as we lay in damp, dewy grass,
humming crickets and screaming silence,
cloaked from the elements
now it is september
you are fading, and
the restlessness coiled inside me is growing
i’ll leave your scent behind,
your pretty eyes, your sly smiles
and move on to the next
