I thought a world without you seemed incomplete.
But I listen as a swallow sings your hymn.
Your soul survives as a song so sweet.

Your heart was grand, your body petite.
You welcomed strangers as though they were your kin.
I thought a world without you seemed incomplete.

Your house remains prim, proper, and neat.
Your style lingers and seeps in
Your soul survives as a song so sweet.

The Gaelic Blessing still rests where you would sleep.
“…May the wind always be at your back” pushes me forward, away from sin.
I thought a world without you seemed incomplete.

There are days when I want to call and speak
To the grandmother who loved from deep within.
Your soul survives as a song so sweet.

As an Angel, I hope you guide me;
Lead me to the light that’s hidden.
I thought a world without you seemed incomplete.
Your soul survives as a song so sweet.

I was assigned to write a Villanelle and decided to finally write about my grandmother, which I've been avoiding since she passed away in '09. I'm proud of this piece and I'm just happy to have finally written about her.
