Requiem to the Hamburger
O hamburger
So juicy, fat and
beefy,
humble, but
sad,
perversely glad for it’s digestion,
how can it meet the end in bliss?
O cows,
grazing
in the meadows,
serene,
and unaware,
so undeserving
of the fate
which they are forced
to endure
who could k-i-l-l such innocence?
O farmer,
sunburned,
in faded overalls,
knows the pain and
death
he causes,
but does not lift a finger,
does he not see the m u r d e r he commits?
O slaughterhouse
the house of
d-e-a-t-h
chopping heads
skinning hides
ending lives
how can people close their eyes to the truth?
O sharpened blade,
ready and
waiting,
emitting an evil glitter
in the shining sun,
does the sun still shine on such an act?
O cows,
lined up,
in a funeral procession,
they hear
the cries of
d-e-a-t-h,
they do not
know the pain,
but who can know it?
O cows,
gripped,
by the dread
and
the chill
of d e a t h itself
scared and dejected,
resigned,
yet
terrified
and who can call them cowardly?
O axe,
falling down,
down,
and still
downward,
splicing life itself
splattering,
splitting
blood
into the still, thin air
how can such a life end in a heartbeat?
O hamburger,
symbol
of the
greed and
avarice
of mankind,
to commit such butchery
and broil the remaining evidence
how can they eat this slaughtered carcass?
O memory,
live on
remember the genocide
even when all the last
of the b l o o d
is
washed away,
will no one fight for the truth?
