Static
Imagine
A chain link fence in an empty lot
distracted echoes bouncing off the pavement with
scratched black pebbles as we walk.
It's bare behind that chain link fence
like a reflection, but without our five silhouettes
that chain link fence, so high, so wide,
urges 'climb me over to the other side.'
A hand upon the metal, then another, then a foot,
Maybe you loved how we stared in awe.
Perched atop that chain link fence, we look, we feel so small.
Such a long way down, but you jump, and it hurts
you bite your lip, dig nails into your arm, and
flash a grin so wide, 'so there',
And point to us and dare.
Two hands upon the metal, then two more and then two feet.
And you both smiled, loving how we stared in awe.
Sitting atop that chain link fence, we look, we feel so small.
But something's wrong.
Somehow farther down, but you let go, and it hurts
Asphalt scrapes skin and clothes tear wire.
You flash grins so wide, 'so there',
And point to us and dare.
Thre hands upon the metal, then three more and then three feet.
And you didn't even look, sure we were staring in awe.
Clinging atop that chain link fence, we look, we feel so small.
And three smiles less.
It's ages down, but you fall, and it hurts
You feel bone crack and your ears against the pavement
You can't speak, but the others don't care,
Just look to us and dare.
Four hands upon the metal, then four more and then four feet.
And you had even forgotten to want me to stare in awe.
Hanging onto that chain link fence, I look but don't feel so small.
And I'm not staring in awe.
You can't see down, but you fly, and it hurts
The world starts spinning and static fills your ears
And as gray fades to black and pain to numb,
Your last thought it scared;
what a stupid, stupid dare.
