Fall
Today is the first day of fall,
The radio, the newspaper announces.
The mere word instills
Trees aflame with color,
Wind whistling, lulling me to sleep,
Leaves succumbing to gravity--
Caressing my face as they tumble downward.
All wrapped up with the scent of a cut-up pumpkin,
The feel of its slimy innards…
The illusion snaps,
And I realize, as I feel the blistering heat,
The sweat pooling on the small of my back
As I listlessly kick at a soccer ball
That fall is still a long time a coming.
