For My Soldier

Problems and pain—
That’s all I cause.
Pointing out all of
Our littlest flaws.
I hurt myself,
But I hurt him worse.
Always opening my mouth,
Never thinking first.
If I’m not careful,
I will lose him altogether.
I have to do something
To make this better.
Easier said than done,
I do admit.
But I won’t give up;
I won’t quit.
But I don’t know how
To let go of this anger.
Even to myself,
I am a complete stranger.
Oh, the things I would do
Just to be with him…
The light at the end
Is looking dangerously dim.
But I swear
I will fight
And restore
The light.
It will be bright—
Brighter than the sun.
And to it I will look,
I will run.
I am so proud
Of the man he has become.
All of the obstacles
That he has overcome.
I admire his strength,
I admire his soul.
I admire his heart,
Which I miraculously stole.
I admire his optimism
He possesses every day.
I admire how he loves me
In every single way.
And to him, I say,
“I love you.
And I miss you so much.
You’re my strength,
My rock, my crutch.
I promise you
You’ll get your lover back.
The moment I get down there
To help you pack.
We’ve been strong
These past two years.
I refuse t give in
To some stupid fears.
So together we’ll fight
These feelings of mine.
With you by my side,
I know I’ll be fine.
I’m waiting for my soldier,
You know where I’ll be.
The time is approaching
For you to come and get me.”

The author's comments:
My boyfriend is in the Army. When I wrote this, we had been apart for two years. Now we have reached the end of his contract, and we are happily reunited and loving every moment of it. I am living breathing proof that long-distance relationships can work out if your love is strong enough.
