Pieces

Hysteria hits….

Amidst a stampede,

Part of me is already broken,

But the rest fall to pieces

I see the gun in their bloody hands,

Smoke surrounding me,

Bloodshed everywhere,

My dread overtakes me

The lives that they took,

My heart anguished,

Those brutal eyes,

The world in pieces…

The Earth in pieces,

Like broken shards of glass,

Never to be revived,

My beloved country in pieces,

What did I expect?

But if someway, somehow, somewhere,

Those pieces glided right into each other,

Pieces become a whole,

And a whole stays a whole...

I wanted to capture the impact of war through the eyes of a teenage girl. Conflicts in Iraq, Syria, and Afganistan inspired me to write this piece.
