“Real isn't how you are made,' said the Skin Horse. 'It's a thing that happens to you. When a child loves you for a long, long time, not just to play with, but really loves you, then you become Real.'

'Does it hurt?' asked the Rabbit.

'Sometimes,' said the Skin Horse, for he was always truthful. 'When you are Real you don't mind being hurt.'

why is it that we fold flightless origami birds
just to create air bound paper airplanes,
that will inevitably crash to the ground?

hope is a thing without wings of its own,
and yet it is able to provide us with them,
but those tattered wax creations can only take us so far,
before we become like icarus,
so carried away by our own bliss,
that we forget what it feels like to fall.

and when we crash into the ground
we are left with nothing but broken bones & heavy hearts
that even band-aids are unable to fix.

but we get up,
because we are made of hope and love and pain and stardust,
and it takes a lot more than that,
to take the life out of our flawed bodies.

as long as we are alive
we continue on
from every new beginning,
to somewhere a little different from before.

and no matter how many times we feel ourselves
getting farther from the sun
and closer to the ground,
we carry our hope with us —
the only part of our being
that is truly invincible.

why is it that we fold flightless origami birds
just to create air bound paper airplanes,
that will inevitably crash to the ground?
because we all hope to become birds one day,
and be completely, and utterly free,
without the fear of falling.
