Staring Back At Me
This empty sheet
This desolate face
Is known to me
As a disgrace
I can’t imagine
What my reflection would be
If I ever looked
Genuinely happy
But no
Thank god
I’m not blinded by a smile
This mirage
This facade
Is getting a denial
Whenever I’m smiling
I feel like I’m lying
Whenever I’m frowning
I feel like I am drowning
So I chose a blank sheet
To wear upon my face
My eyes have no shine
They are simply pools of grey
But will this ever be okay
Will I make it through the day
And then to my dismay
You make me smile
But it’s different
I’m not lying this time
And I am finally proud
Of this person staring back at me
When I look into the mirror
And I realize the smile is mine
