Pride and Regret: A Life Cycle
On another occasion, I climbed a ladder.
Rung after rung
And I didn’t look down.
My head was held high,
With a greedy smile beaming.
But I soon realized there was nothing at the top.
Not for me, anyway. Not now.
And after a pause, I carefully began my quiet descent.
A puzzled shame pulled at my smile.
Maybe no one would notice if I moved slowly?
But I wavered, and my foot slipped.
And it was a long way down.
